I think that the banning order is wrong as most fans arent offended by such comments including gay supporters, most just laugh it off.

Kind of depends what they actually said doesn't it really. Given the punishment I doubt it was "we can see you holding hands". The CPS and the police are dumb very often but they're not that dumb.

I do have a problem with people outside the stadium or in the train queue spouting foul mouthed homophobic abuse at kids.

Didn't see that but if thats what they did then its no wonder they were banned and deservidly so.

I don't think they are dumb, quite the opposite they are very calculating, plenty of examples of when they have not pursued cases for politically sensitive reasons..........

Much better to bring the absolute full force of the law and all the costs involved on these 2 as oppose to say fixed penalties.

No, you have to be injured. Victim surcharges on cases go to the Criminal Injuries compensation authority.
