Homophobic chanting

It's not the overall chants that are bad, they are just boring, it's individuals that shout and gesture some disgusting stuff in and outside the Amex. It's individual away fans that need to be thrown out and get their club fined.

Absolutely. These cretins would rightly run the risk of being arrested if they did it somewhere else publicly, but at the football it seems that they have carte blanche to shout what they like at folk with complete impunity. We rightly wouldn't put up with other nasty shit that's aimed at other minority groups these days, so I think it's high time the perpetrators were weeded out & charged.

The alternative is to bury your head in the sand or 'have a pop' at these idiots: but unfortunately neither approach would lead to a satisfactory long-term solution. It's about time The Club made a concerted effort to stamp this crap out - & likewise the FA, the Police & the vast majority of decent supporters.

Lancing
the fact is nothing is being changed, the chanting of homophobic abuse is already illegal by the FA with ejection from the ground. It just a question if anyone can be bothered to enforce it.

I saw it happen in Stoke a few years ago. A Brighton fan was walking back to the station in the City centre. Someone from a side-street wearing a Balaclava ran out, punched him in the head and shouted 'gay twat' and then run away.
How did you, and the assailant, know he was gay? I'm guessing neither of you did, and the truth is he was assaulted for being a Brighton fan and not for his sexuality. If Stoke had been playing Cardiff the attacker would have said 'Sheepshagging twat'.

Brighton
I think this this has all come about because we've got nothing else to moan about.

It's been going on for years and will continue to do so IMO.

I dont think its THAT bad. But if we are getting reported for Sheep Shagger gate, then this should be looked at too

IMO I think some of Brighton's chants are much much worse than the homophopic drivel we get every week. Two games already this season we have sung about 1 individual fan, not a making a generalisation about the whole area. Im talking the Leicester "slapper" and the woman at Birmingham on Saturday

On the contrary, words can be powerful. Keep telling a child that they're useless when they growing and 90% of the time, they will grow up being useless. A few may find it a motivation to prove others wrong, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Banter is acceptable but where do you draw the line? We can see you holding hands/ does your boyfriend know you're here is banter and everyone accepts that, but there has been obscene chanting recently at Leicester and Millwall.
Excellent post...

Worthing
I think this is well overdue. While the patheticness of it limits the impact, it is time homophobia was put on a par with racism.

Oddly, the whole Craig Bellamy incident has probably put this up many people's to do list as seemingly everything else is outlawed in a football ground apart from it.

Not the real one
West Ham - " f*ck off home and stick your c*ck in your Boyfriends a*se you f*cking f*ggots " was the general jist of the friendly banter outside the Amex last Monday. I don't find this right. Banter about the team, players, ref, fine but this, is this really football banter and if so, why ?.

Very much this, this is the type of stuff that has to stop. The chanting in the ground is general and not directed at any individual. Then again, anyone shouting stuff like this, homophobic or not outside, should be stamped on by the OB. They aren't interested I fear. Also this is all about inside the ground, and that's not necessarily the problem.

The fact that it is offending some of our more sensitive fans is I suppose reason to try to clamp down on it.

Personally I really couldn't give a toss, the last time I got offended by any thing like this I was 10 and called a bender in the playground causing other 10 year olds to laugh.

Assume its not an issue because you are both a 'real bloke' and NOT a bender then...is bullying.is hatred-just because you put up with it,doesnt make it right..

More to the point how old are you? Is racist chanting OK? I mean, sticks and stones eh?

Out of interest if a player announced that he was gay, you would be OK with fans handing out vitriolic and hateful abuse to him? I mean they're just words, no?

What about if the "does your boyfriend know your here" chants were aimed at our lady supporters?
Very good point. Ditto "We can see you holding hands". Neither of those are homophobic per se, and for the second the singers could claim "We were singing it at the heterosexual Brighton couples." It's a very old-fashioned view to assume that all Brighton fans are male, the whole thing could become a legal minefield with both sides invoking various sections of the Human Rights Act and probably Health and Safety legislation as well.

:facepalm::facepalm:
So u have never shouted, ' Northern Monkey'? Sheep Shagger? Scouse git? Scottist idiot? see where I am going?

If the truthful answer is no......Im glad I dont go to football with you.....

The above are NOT racist or threating.....same way as gay chants are not...worrying the majority of us...

you are like the little kid in the playground who wants it all his own way..
In my opinion complaing about chanting at football is quite pathetic.

Have you ever played the game and had an opponent 'whisper' nice greetings in your ear? even in a pub team it happens or did u cry off to mummy..

Grows some balls .....you DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME
No...wouldnt want to talk with someone quite so unreconstructed..but clearly someone has to speak for you or we would still be monkey chanting at players like liam bridcutt, wouldnt we...?

Grow up, it's banter.

It becomes serious when it is no longer meant in jest and these comments start being made at people who are gay with the intent of upsetting and isolating them.

It is a problem if a player comes out as gay and gets stick for it, but seeing as nobody has any idea which Brighton fans at a match are gay, it really is no different to being told "you're gay" in the playground. It means nothing.

Racism is much less common in football now. This is due to a concerted effort over time to highlight abuse and challenge this behaviour. I am of the opinion that the same needs to be done with homophobia before it lessens in football. I am sure it will get worse before it gets better.
Yes agree...so in the words of nsc-people are going to need to 'man up',..'grow a pair' and deal with the change thats coming...

We are not little kids at a football match...we are grown adults.....

If you dont think it is the right enviroment for a kid, the answer is simple....if you are a good parent ...DONT TAKE THEM
No-is not the right environment for reasonable human beings-how about as a homophobe you just go away and dont come to football?you are not wanted here anymore.

In my opinion we should sing the real words to Sussex By The Sea

verse 1:

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be GAY
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way
So let your voices ring, my boys,
And take the time from me
And I'll sing you a song, as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.

As we're playing Watford tomorrow, can we expect to sing:

"he's bald, he's bent, he's 8rse is up for rent - Elton John, Elton John"?

Like we did in the 80's?

I remember the whole of the north stand shouting "Stab Stab Stab" whenever Trevor Morley got the ball when we played West Ham in 1991- He was stabbed by his wife.

I think the moral of the story is that football fans who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!
