I don't think he has a 'fan club' as such, but people come to his defence because the nature of the criticisms of him appear to be petty, smallminded, vindictive and spiteful.

No it isnt, its opinion, the very fact that you bemoan the service that CMS has had of late is clear evidence that Barnes hasnt done his job, he is the man in the hole behind the forwards, linking with the forward(s),.... this for the most part has not happened. However, on those rare occasions when Vicente has come on to do that job, it has actually happened..... Barnes is a striker, but sadly at lower league level.... thanks Ash, but peripheral role at best for me once we have adequate replacements.

I personally don't have a problem with Barnes and to be fair he has probably been one of our most improved players / consistent players this season, people have to remember he has been asked to play in a different role of late, sitting in the hole behind the striker and playing a lot deeper than he has previously, yes he can be petulant at times and he does tend to give the ball away, but overall his work rate and tracking back have seen him quite rightly applauded for his efforts.

My personal view is that the addition of Razak and Assulin and the return of Sparraw from suspension, it may well see a change in the way we setup and on that basis I feel it maybe the end of Barnes playing in that deeper role, you then have to ask yourself if he is ahead of CMS and Vokes in the pecking order for an out and out forward role ? My honest answer is no.

This is pretty much my view.

OK on the chin for point 2.

Last season is just that, League 1 against League 1 Defenders. Why does Michael Owen not start every week for the Northern Scum (Thats having a pop) He used to be brilliant!

Last season CMS was League 1 against League 1 defenders too, and we spunked £2.5million for him.

I agree that with the signing of the two City players, the form of KLL/Noone/Buckley and the omnipresent Bridcutt, Barnes would not be in my first XI, but I wouldn't at the same time call him lazy, disinterested and not good enough for the stiffs.

yup. Said it on another thread.
Barnes is my favourite Albion player at the moment for the way he has developed and adapted to a new role at a higher level. I genuinely think he is outstanding and I often have to shake my head when I read some of the comments on here from people who, I am certain, have no concept of the technicalities of the game and how it is played. That said we have two good full backs now and a midfield that will not need the level of additional protection Barnes has been employed to offer. We have Vokes and CMS and it is now time to see if they can forge a partnership. Change the way we set up. Use the talents we have to the full.

I think that is a fair assessment, but would you describe Barnes as lazy, disinterested, not good enough for the reserves and offers nothing apart from being able to take a penalty?

That Glenn Murray geezer would not get back in the Brighton side the way that Ashley Barnes is playing. I have reservations about some of his decision making. Hitting a 30 yard hit and hope shot at Cardiff, really! Is he going to do it again, or do something sensible like pass the ball?

If it had not been for Barnes at Wrexham, we would not have been playing Liverpool last Sunday.

Very true.

And I do agree that posting such helpful comments as "Barnes is Shit" does nothing to add to the debate.

That being said I think that there are a few on here that view him with the rose tinted spectacles on.

He isnt lazy, he does buzz around, its just he hasnt got the quality to pick the ball up under pressure, and lay it off or put in a through ball for CMS,..... and dont ask me about his finishing, sheesh, its wayward to say the least.

I believe Barnes is one of our most important palyers at the moment and well deserves his place...his critics have to stop thinking of him as a striker...he is now a forward midfielder and covers more of the pitch than any other...I lost count of the times he came back and cleared the ball out of the box on Sunday....if he hadn't been there it could have been 10-1...he tracks back to cover left back and he wins more free kicks than he concedes.

OK its true his first touch is poor, but he is young and still learning and when he cracks that skill he will be a top goal assister for us.....oh yes and he is our best penalty taker.

I thought Barnesy did ok on Sunday. He caused problems for Enrique and held the ball up well and managed to get free-kicks in dangerous areas. I'm not sure why we're playing him out on the wing quite so regularly, when he is a out and out striker.

Maybe we share different views as to what is having a pop at someone, IMHO I dont think Barnes is good enough for the current team, That is an Opinion.

I think xyz is a wank3r, hes sh1t etc, That is having a pop at someone,

However the great thing is none of it really matters, as football is all based on opinions and we are (Although some would disagree) allowed to have our opinion and thoughts.
You said "Barnes is crap" and a lot more, including saying he is lazy - which is bizarre. You were having a pop at him. just your opinion as you say but you were having a pop at him.

Maybe Gus watches a different player to me when Barnes is on the Pitch, However IMHO Barnes should not be in the reserves let alone the 1st team or Bench.

I would love to know what he tells Barnes to do when he enters the pitch, because I just can’t see that Gus tells him to Look Lazy, Disinterested, and moan at every opportunity!!

The Player offers us NOTHING other than being able to take a penalty.

I for one and Im sure Im not on my own, question how he manages to play week in and week out. What is the point in his position? He’s either giving away free kicks in our half or looking like he out for a stroll in the opponents half.

OK So Im on a Roll, if Gus was really intending to go for broke on when he made the subs on Sunday, why oh why did he not play CMS and Bertie Vokes together and take Barnes off?. Why play our potential gem at left back for the last half hour. Although Noone is outstanding or has been this season to be fair he could not tackle a decent meal let alone the Liverpool front line.

At the end of the day Poyet knows more than me BUT FFS Barnes is cr*p!!!!!

End of and feel much better.

Proves you know nothing IMHO

Ash tracks back more than our wingers, 9 times out of 10 when were defending he's in our box clearing the ball, he's our top goal scorer regardless if it was from the spot or not because when you put the ball on the penalty spot your not guarenteed to score, he scored 20 goals for us last season!!

To think like you do you must have only watched the game on tv but if you did watch it at anfield i'm afraid you must have been over awed by watching players like gerrard to even notice the hard work that Ash put in those 90 minutes he played!!!!!! Rant over!!!

No he isn't he's been playing a sort of left-wing-midfield role.

The amount of people who immediately jump to the defence of Barnes is beyond being a good fan.
I admit he has become abit of a scapegoat and he is improving all the time, he's young and occasionally looks a good player at this level. However for the most part he offers nothing in the position he plays, he often plays as a supporting striker or attacking wide man and going forward he offers very little, admittedly he usually works hard and tracks back more than most but that for me isnt enough to warrent Gus' apparent unlimited loyalty to Ash.

Some of the games this season he has been woeful, when we are about to make a change I think 'this time it must me Ash' but it never is.

Dont get me wrong, i think he does have something to offer us and is a valuble squad player but he is played far to often and never seems to be subbed when he is having a stinker.

IMO the Navarro situation is becomming a joke, I think he is rubbish and offers us abslutely nothing. He doesnt break down play (which the majority on here seem to think is the reason he is in the team) he slows down our attacks when the ball gets to him, has no creativity and is generally carried through games by Bridcutt. At least Barnesy has something about him sometimes that makes you think he could be a good player. Navarro never seems to be subbed when he's playing bad (Recently Gus seems to prefer to take Bridcutt of and leave Navarro on) which is comical yet he's constantly named in the team.

As many have said I agree that Barnes has come on again this season and is constantly improving, I dont always agree that he should be starting as many games as he does though. But SHIT he certainly isnt.

People see what they want to see. Barnes works hard and is a very good player for his age.

Barnes has been excellent this past month or so. Anyone who think he's shit I have no time for really, would rather talk to people who know something about football! :)
