Barnes was so much better than Vokes on Sunday. He's been playing well lately, people need to pay attention.

Bridcutt came off injured in the first half at Watford. Apart from that, I think he's only ever been subbed twice. EVER.

Quite.

Portsmouth came off on 87min
Watford came off on 30min
Burnley came off on 89min
Millwall came off on 86min

Missed
Coventry City
Wrexham (at home)

Bridcutt as played every minute of every game other than those above.

Millwall spings to mind where we are going for the win and takes Bridcutt off over Navarro. Not that the final 6 or so minutes really matters, I just will never understand (other than injuries) why you would want to keep Navarro on the pitch over Bridcutt. Crazy!!

Millwall score when bridcutt went off 2-1 to millwall. Hardly going for the win. Besides, Bridcutt was replaced by Lualua, who went on to score the goal that rescued the point for us.

Regardless who he came on for he would have scored. My point was I would rather see Bridcutt on the pitch over Navarro. Bridcutt is twice the player

Navarro who had scored the winner in injury time, 3 days earlier at Leeds, and from whose goal-bound effort we had equalised that night? Madness.

I'm not either a Barnes lover or a hater, does some very good work for the side and always seems to be doing what he is told by Gus.

Problem on here is some think he is great (he isnt).... some think he is shit (he isnt)

Truth is that he is playing in a role he never has before and working hard to make it work, thought he was probably our best player first half against Liverpool along with Kazenga but disappeared in the second half

The main problem i have is that he doesnt have the creativity to play the attacking side of the role that he is playing... all his good work seems to be in his own half and not the opposing half which must be frustrating for him. I think that with the man city loanees i would imagine he may struggle to get into the side.

What so you would rather we played Navarro over Bridcutt then??

You can't know that.

All we know is that the decision to take off Bridcutt and bring on Lualua resulted in us going from being 2-1 down to a respectable (given the performance) 2-2, so you can't really say it was wrong or crazy. Bridcutt hasn't scored this season. If you're desperate for a goal and you can take off a defensive minded midfielder who scored a winner in the last game and whose attacking efforts played a part in the first goal, or take off the defensive midfielder who has been slowing down attacks, hesitate with the pass losing forward options with the crowd getting on his back for it and who hasn't scored all season.

I'm not saying Navarro is better. I happen to mostly agree with the second part of your post (I think Navarro is underrated by many fans, and the way I read your comments leads me to believe you're one of those who undervalue him), my point is that your portrayal of the situation in the millwall game is hugely inaccurate and that in the circumstances, and given how things panned out, it's a decision people shouldn't be criticising.

If it wasn't Barnes, it would be someone else that is being ripped apart. That has always been the nature of Albion fans.

Part of the reason why Barnes has a new role is that we have a lacked a decent left back all season. Painter has been injured half the season, and his lack of pace has been exposed, and for all his wind-up skills and commitment Bomber is easily skinned by a swift winger. As a consequence Barnes has been doubling up a lot of the time to support the left back.

In terms of FLAIR, I would have chosen Murray, Hoskins and CMS ahead of Barnes when choosing the team, but Gus has sold the first, loaned out the second, and the third is getting splinters on his bum on the bench after proving to be Alex Revell 2.0. They cost £3.3million between them.

Perhaps Gus has got it wrong, but we are in the top half of the Championship, two points off a play off, our best position for 21 years, and have been in the fifth round of the FA Cup for two consecutive seasons for the first time since 1984, so perhaps we ought to cut Gus and Digger a bit of slack and be positive, rather than moaning?

Cheers. Are you coming down to the game on Saturday? Will Chopra be playing?

Good post.

You had a similar hard working young striker a couple of years back, in Jordan Rhodes, didn't you? Whatever happened to him?

Determining if Barnes (or indeed anyone else) is excellent, OK or shit, is conditional on what it is you're wanting to achieve ... is it promotion, consolidation or avoiding relegation? Depending on which it is has to influence your view

I'm going to say I'm not a fan of Barnes at this level, he's 1st touch is poor, he's not strong on the ball and seems to spend alot of time falling over also he's shooting is alover the place but Gus sees something and just recently I've started to notice what it maybe. For all the faults I've listed he always seems to be in the right place or thick of the action maybe Gus thinks give the player time ( this is only his 2nd season and 1st at this level) and like Adam E he may come good.

I personally thought Barnes had one of his better games. He held the ball up pretty well when required and won quite a few free kicks. Was often tracking back to defend too.

He's playing out of position quite a bit at the moment it seems. I'm not a huge Barnes fan, but I think he does put a shift in when required.

Barnesy has been playing out of position so we can't make comparisons with last season. I do however think he will be losing his place in the starting line up with Razak and Assulin bolstering the midfield.
