I wasn't aware that the government had done away with this obligation - in fact, I thought that the reason the council was doing this was because it had to.

You mean that a Conservative council is acting out of pure altruism? Blimey, it really has changed

Good news. Now we need more assistance for the community in other ways - for instance, greater assistance with education, making it easier to obtain school places, less bureaucracy in moving from school to school, and assistance for those who wish to educate their children within the community rather than at school.

The councils no longer have to provide these sites. A number are currently doing so because they have successfully applied for government funding for this purpose.

One of the main reasons that Brighton attracts a large number of travellers is, of course, that the people of Brighton spend a lot of money on services that travellers provide. It's an economic thing. If you don't want travellers, don't pay them to do work or provide services. If you pay them to do work, you'll have to accept the fact that they will be living in your city.

At least the council is now starting to manage the situation.
