I have lost about 1 stone 10oz's since just before Xmas as i thought that is best time to diet and the will power has to be strong then.

How i did it was simple, i looked at carbohydrate of which sugar on all packaging and anything below 10g in 100g was okay higher than that forget it.

Basically i stopped eating cereals and swapped to porridge with the slightest amount of honey on it. Didn't eat my usually flapjack for lunch and only had a couple of biscuits per week which were rich tea.

No extra exercise....No watching the bacon buttys.

Sugar turns to fat and is addictive and makes you feel hungry even when your not.

It was surprisingly easy to go cold turkey on the sugar which i now don't miss at all it is the devils food!

Ps my asthma seem in better control also so should help your COPD.

Good luck.

Good point about sugar.
Sugars are completely over-used in our food nowadays - and it causes about as much grief as smoking!

Diabetes can even be caused by too much sugar, I heard.
Asthma - and skin problems are related. Sugar does affect the breathing and contributes to congestion, so it's probably alright to assume that skin complaints will also be exacerbated by sugar.
Fatty layers and sugar can contribute to boils and sebaceous cysts, or at least make them harder to deal with.... and who knows what can happen if a cyst gets stuck into you beneath all that fat and gets infected, before or after any attempted treatment?
Obesity can lead to all kinds of related issues - why would anyone want to wait until 'something' happens? The Doc. will diagnose, and sometimes explain why you got something, but might not always say "because you're obese you go this" as it's not always in their scope to directly attribute everything.

What is more important than looking after your health - and who is to know when why and what you will get, as a consequence of failure to address issues that are clearly threatening to it?

It's worth anyone's while to research what might be threatening and how to help yourself away from such.
e.g. red meats aren't particularly good if you have heart problems (or maybe family history). It's well known that greens help many many aspects of a healthy body - as with fruit and a balanced diet. We just don't NEED as many carbohydrates as most of us consume unless we do sports, and also with salt and sugar we are overloaded as a rule.

I am 67 years old weigh 21st and admit I am too fat. I can diet to reduce the weight if needed but that is not the problem. The problem is The Gut!!! how do I reduce that. I know people will say exercise but wont go to a gym because 1 cant really afford it and I think they are a rip off so what is the next answer simple ask NSC.

well I'm 64 and overweight, and recently had a very bad chest infection and lost two stone (I'm now 14 stone and still losing at least 2Ib a week)and managed to keep it off for the last 6 weeks by eating the sort of meals when I was ill.
basically what I am saying is less food more exercise.
my short and trousers now don't fit and my extra large Albion shirt actually fits loosely
I don't suggest you go out and get a chest infection but eat less and get a large garden or an allotment
be lucky

This post has come at the right time for me , as yesterday i went for a pre - assessment for an umbilical hernia op. After various tests i spoke to the Anaesthetist who explained that i had signs of diabetes , my blood pressure is still high even after taking tablets for many years , this is causing one side of my heart problems , and finally the liver has seen better days . I am 18.5 stone and have had the operation cancelled until i lose 2 stone . At least they found out these things whilst they are still curable . Will be changing my lifestyle as from today as the results scared the life out of me .

Yes, I know a little bit about that particular op. The gauze needs some time to bond in, and justabout any adverse movement or pressure pushing out could easily damage the work. Plus, how would they get into muscle tissue at all, if the fat is too much to get through...it can get ugly for surgeons and medical staff.

I realise you aren't in this position quite  but I remember seeing in the Intensive Care ward at Brighton, a very overweight woman being climbed on by a couple of staff and getting pounded to get the heart working again. A huge naked pile to have to work on, and I don't think they succeeded (RIP that woman) because I don't think she was there the next time I walked through IC.

You just don't see many very old, very obese people.

Sugar is my personal addiction hell, I god damn love the stuff.
By cutting out the really obvious excesses (curse you Haribo, Fruit Pastilles, Wine Gums, et al), and upping my cycling exercise due to the weather.
I've lost just over half a stone since Christmas.
Fortunately my job has changed so I now walk anywhere between 5 - 10 miles a day, extra, so my weight is still falling.

These 'minor' changes for which I'm seeing results, are really spurring me on as I know soon I will plateau, and will need to make dietitary changes.
This which will definitely be easier as I have done some good 'ground work'.

Oh and I have a goal/target for Sept '12.

People have all given good tips which are more specifics on the eat less, exercise more theme which is the cornerstone of losing weight. I have a little extra to add to the way you go about it.

If you think your willpower is amazing, you might be able to make some drastic changes, but my experience is people who are overweight, don't have the strongest willpower (this most definitely includes myself). You're best to make small changes, if you turn around tomorrow and are eating eggs with Kimichi for breakfast, and salads for lunch, you will have a large chance of burning out on it a few weeks down the line.

For food, the calorie counting is tedious crap, no one likes it. I suggest doing it initially, but only to educate yourself, then you will have a pretty good idea of what your calorie intake is. If you are very determined calorie counting certainly helps, but everything is about a routine, and if you get into a routine of calorie counting, at some point you'll likely break it, and have the potential to break other routines. Its not as important as other routines as long as you are eating generally well, and not over eating (you need the initial experience to be fairly sure you are ok).

Also if item A is 10% more calories than item B, but you hate B and like A ... eat A, make it up in other areas. There are a lot of healthy items you will find you like, you just never got into a routine of eating them (I love apples and berries, great snacks). Experiment, try a salad you never tried before. If its shit, don't buy it again, just always be on the look for something healthy you might enjoy. Eat proteins, they are filling and hard for your body to convert to energy. Chicken is my go to food, if its lean its good.

For exercise, what you do is not important initially. Doing it, getting into a routine and making it as pleasurable as you can are key. I get bored doing aerobic activities, so I found it was important for me to have music to keep my mind get into a rhythm and I could not rely on my gyms music to do it for me, if a shit song comes on I find myself staring at the clock on my exercycle / treadmill thinking about how the hell I'm going to exercise for the amount of time I planned. Some people will want a distraction, you can download podcasts (guardian has a football podcast for example). If you can do an activity with some friends it is a HUGE help with sticking to the routine. Try to pick something your not ashamed of doing (its hard to admit, but you will feel shame if you are overweight and you start doing some activities around fitter people). Theres no point going running with your friends if they are fitness freaks and you are struggling. They may be the most positive people in the world, it will not make you feel good.

To sum up, you know the basics, try to be creative to have some fun with it and avoid it being a tedious slog.

As a diabetic I can tell you that you heard incorrectly. Type 2 diabetes can be caused by obesity but not directly by eating too much sugar!

That's not what the doctor told my father. He was warned a year or so ago he was borderline diabetic, and the cause was traced to the amount of Coca-cola in his diet - ie too much sugar (my dad- bless him - didn't realise it contained sugar). He cut the soft drinks out of his diet and the problem receded. He's been fat/obese for as long as I've known him, but the excess sugar (and consequent diabetes warning) was only a recent addition.

Has anybody used or have views either for or against the Wi Fit. Is it worth me buying it.

I would have thought it will help but you need to stick at it and do it all the time. It is a great shame you cannot do the walking part as I make myself walk a minimum of 30 minutes everyday be it naturally at work as I walk to the station or at the weekends which I am sure keeps my weight around 12st 10.

Not as a specific weight loss tool.

It is though, a remarkably good, user friendly games console, for all ages, that has Wii Fit.
We've got Wii Fit, it has some nice touches, you can certainly get a good work out, from it, and get a sweat on!

But realistically will it still be used in your household in 3 months time?

I decided I wanted to get my BMI down at the new year, and that meant shedding some timber. For me, I stopped eating crisps, biscuits, cake and chocolate completely. Not easy. I was pretty good at 5 a day fruit anyway and became more strict with that. I have avoided bread (eating wraps etc for the weekend lunch) and as much as possible prepared meals. I also have porridge at weekends. For brekkie I have a decent handful of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, goji berries/cranberries/blue berries.

With no exercise, I have lost 1 3/4 stone, dropping 2-3 belt sizes and a waist size. In that sense, the gut is being busted. My BMI is now under the overweight threshold and I am chuffed with that. To get my BMI down further will require exercise and I will cycle when I can.

I felt so much better after about a month. I use the kids' wii fit every couple of weeks or so to monitor my BMI which is still going down, albeit at a slower rate.

Go for it BGG. I've seen lots of good comments and hope this helps a little.

A couple of years ago I bought the Weightwatchers Pure Points cd so have decided that I will re install it on my pc and follow that and also take the advice of many on here as regards walking and see how it goes. My biggest addiction is coke but I drink the Cokle Zero form so that shouldnt matter very much according to their adverts.

I would have thought drinking any sort of cola is a problem surely there are other chemicals that perhaps create an addiction within it ?

Can't stand the stuff and gave up lager a few years back for either bitter or wine.

If you could change that for water you'd lose an initial lump of weight, without trying.

I hope you've faired better than me, this weekend.

I've eaten more chocolate in the last 24hrs, than I have done in the rest of the year.

Well I reluctantly played a full 70 minute football match this morning and have just been for a half-hour walk so I should bloody well hope so !
