Hope im not hijacking this thread but i need to shift a bit too. I gave up smoking 7 years ago and ive put on 7 stone. Im 44 and ive still got time to sort things out.

However, im the head gardener at Preston rock garden opposite preston park in Brighton. Therefore im pretty active all day....mowing, strimming, walking, up and down the banks etc etc. When i get home after working 9 hours, the last thing i need is a trip to the gym and a bowl of lettuce !!!!!

I love my food and im a pretty decent cook....but i also love my beer....real ale, so i appreciate that's where it's got to start.

Any suggestions how to proceed with some weight loss programes ?

The best way to lose weight is life heavy weights and eat a diet of lean meat and vegetables. If you do this right your body will be burning calories 24/7 rather than the hour during and few hours after cardio. It will also improve your body composure far better.

It sounds like you're pretty active anyway, and you seem to know you need to drop the beer but you're just reluctant to actually do it!

Might not help Jevs if you don't want to go to the gym, but might help someone.

Warm Up
10 minutes jogging on the treadmill – nice and easy, get the heart rate up.

Stretches
Start from bottom up doing the following:
Ankle rotation
Calf stretch
Hamstring stretch
Quad stretch
Knees together rotation
Glutes stretch
Groin stretch
Side stretch
Chest stretch
Upper back stretch
Tricep stretch
Shoulder stretch
Rotator cuff stretch
Neck rotation

Hold each for 8-10 seconds – I can demonstrate some if you want





Weights

Upper Body
Bench Press – 5 sets x 10 reps
Lat Pull Down – 5 sets x 10 reps
Shoulder Press – 5 sets x 10 reps
Bicep Curl – 5 sets x 10 reps

Lower Body
Squat – 3 sets x 10 reps
Leg Extension – 3 sets x 10 reps
Leg Curl – 3 sets x 10 reps
Calf Raise – 3 sets x 10 reps

Abdominals
Crunches – 5 sets x 10 reps
Leg Raises – 5 sets x 10 reps

Warm Down
Swim and sauna

In all seriousness- look at doing something like Weightwatchers. If you pick the right group, it'll have blokes in it too, and not just be full of fat middle aged women. And it's a very good motivation to stick with the plan if you know you're going to be weighed by someone else at the end of the week rather than just doing it yourself.

I'm planning to shed some weight in the next few months. I'm going to take a side on and front on photo each day at the same time and compile a photo/video montage to have something to show for it (hopefully). I wouldn't get too worked up about losing weight immediately as muscle mass weighs more than fat, so don't panic if weight is not being shifted immediately.

Four weeks ago I split with my girlfriend and had to move into a flat that I can't really afford, so I need to save money. So, the car stays at home unless it's pissing down and I cycle the 3 miles to work most days. There's a big steep hill on the way in, first week I was walking up most of it, after 3 weeks I finally made it all the way in one go, this week I barely notice it. Get a bike, ditch the car and you'll be much fitter, save a fortune and avoid paying so much in tax. I feel so much better for what is a simple change to my life.

Lift weights, eat lean.

I wouldn't suggest lifting weights, if anything building muscle bulk will make you weigh more. Cardiovascular activity is key; walking, cycling, walking up stairs instead of taking a lift, walking up escalators instead of standing. I cycled from Portslade to Ovingdean yesterday, hardly a hill if you take the sea front all the way to the Marina, then along under the cliffs. Amazing. 2l of water per day, no sugar in tea or coffee (this is hard to do, I always had 1 sugar, but after tea I didn't like as much for 2 months I now can't drink tea with sugar in). Lots of the suggestions in this thread will actually save you money!

Eat more fruit and veg. Snacking on these is good because you get vital vitamins and nutrients, and they tend to be low in calories.

Avoid fattier meats like Pork, lamb and beef. Chicken or Turkey are generally better to eat as they are very lean meats (Turkey tends to be cheaper).

As you start exercising you may become more tired, so any foods or drinks with anti-oxidants may help to relax you, for examples Green/White tea, berries etc.

Replace white breads and pastas with wholemeal varieties as they are much better for you and keep you fuller for longer.
 


Oh, and by the way, an important psychological aspect;
Don't OBSESS about the weight issue. It doesn't need to be a crash diet - because you are merely changing your old habitual rut that was bad for you, and making a natural lifestyle choice that will be better for you (and give you any chance of a 'long run' at all! No pressure though :wink: ).

Just make it so - and make it a simple tweak of your living style. You only live once and you don't want obesity to be all there was in this once - so 'just' distract by doing other things when fodder is gnawing at your mind. Yep, water has been mentioned and it's probably the best suggestion. Enjoy feeling hungry - mankind didn't make it through millions of years because we had fridges and supermarkets.
