Fact is, playing for your country used to be seen as an honour. Now its just an inconvenience. Club managers make no bones of the fact they consider it superflous, they'd rather their players were not involved as of course it detracts from their preperations for the all-singing, all-dancing "Best League in the World". Just wait for our underperforming "world class players" to start falling back on the burnout excuse after those glorious 4 games in the summer.

The Premier League has successfully murdered the England team, and this is just another symptom.

Just out of interest how many international games a year was there before the Premier League startedon average? I mean was there one 3 days before the new season?

I'll never see how that's Robinson's fault... total freak goal
It was a freak goal AND it was his fault. But it's not like he does that every game. The other goal in that game was worse in a lot of ways because it was an example of some of his serious flaws as a keeper rather than being a crazy one off.

Dunno. Qualifiers always seem to start around September, so I'm pretty sure there's usually an August friendly of some sort.

We've got a qualifier 3 weeks after this friendly, so it should be used as proper preperation for the Bulgaria game. Obviously its an "irrelevence" though, because 'arry says so.

Capello should just jack it in now. The players arn't even fussed any more.

If it was possible to have a wage cap in the premiership, (say £20k per week), that could only be increased if they were selected for the national team. Then a further increase if they played "x" number of games a season for the national team. This would make the tossers want to make more effort.

Not practical today, I know, but still..............

I think it has lost some of its appeal, but I think part of that is down to over kill, why do we have to have the game wed? FA need the money.

Interesting interview with Wenger in The Times today, basically lamenting the fact that International games for the likes of France and England are hyped and elevated to almost life-or-death levels depending on the result now, so players who perform week-in, week-out for their clubs seem to play for England with the "handbrake on" - fear of losing overrrides and totally suffocates the confidence and will to win.

Now we're seeing more and more players thinking "naah, stuff it, I don't need it". And the fact is - they don't. Expect plenty more retirements in the near future from players who are still supposedly in their prime.

There has been an august friendly most of the last 10 years.

Odd years
1872/73-1938/39 = 73 (ave 1.11 per year)
1946/47-1959/60 = 59 (ave 4.54)

By decade

60/61 - 69/70 = 50 matches (ave 5)
70/71 - 79/80 = 31 (ave 3.1)
80/81 - 89/90 = 40 (ave 4.0)
90/91 - 99/00 = 45 (ave 4.5)
00/01 - 09/10 = 49 (ave 4.9)

By season for the last 20 years.
Season 90/91 - 6 matches
91/92 - 7
92/93 - 1
93/94 - 3
94/95 - 5
95/96 - 8
96/97 - 2
97/98 - 5
98/99 - 3
99/00 - 5
00/01 - 4
01/02 - 7
02/03 - 4
03/04 - 4
04/05 - 5
05/06 - 5
06/07 - 4
07/08 - 6
08/09 - 4
09/10 - 6

England's Friendly Matches - Seasons 2000-01 to 2009-10

Remember, the number of friendlies can be affected by qualification or not for a competition. For instance, if we qualify automatically, we may have friendly matches while the play offs occur. For euro 96 we didn't have to play any qualifiers, so played a few more friendlies than we otherwise would.

Also, years of cup contest may have a few extra friendlies for pre-competition warm up.

But overall there appears to be an increase in friendlies. However, the early eighties saw the end of the home internationals, so perhaps there were more international matches in earlier years, they just don't show up.

Its got f*** all to do with playing for England, they dont want to play for the manager

Agreed. Sam Alladyce seemed to revel in sticking the knife in in the press conference and the media are lapping it up.

I also think there's a certain element of this being typical of footballers these days being delicate little flowers. Don't boo them, or they won't play well; don't expect anything of them, or they play with fear; they just need a hug; I'd play if I were number one choice but I don't want to have to work for it.

Today 3 fringe players - and I include the Carrick exchange - have all made Cappello and the FA look like idiots.

I think today was the first day the FA have realised just because a player is selected for an England squad it doesn't mean they'll want to join.

I can understand Wes Brown's retirement because he has to compete hard for his place in the Man Utd side and they have a heavy schedule, but Paul Robinson's retirement looks little more than petulance.

He has a very real chance of gametime; his tenure as England keeper is actually starting to look pretty decent in light of the shite we've seen since (James / Carson / Green), and IF Joe Hart got injured or had a howler Robinson's the natural alternative.

At 30 - to use David James as an example - he's still got the best part of 10 years of international football ahead of him, if he wants it.

That and the fact he's nailed on to start every game for a Blackburn team not in Europe makes his decision look pretty poor.

Not really a problem though. Losing Heskey, Carragher, Robinson and Brown isn''t exactly catastrophic. Now the young blood can come through without having to fight through pointless muck like the retirees. Brilliant news if you ask me
I agree inasmuch as you can look on it as clearing out the deadwood, but the fact remains that in the 'good old days' no one retired from international football. I remember Bobby Charlton saying that on the plane home from Mexico 70 he sat next to Sir Alf Ramsey, who turned to him and said "Bob, I want to thank you for all you've done for England over the years." Charlton said he knew then he'd never play for England again.

Bit of a sad indinctment of modern football imo.
