Brighton picture quiz

Cranbourne Street it is. Picture was taken in 1966.
... and, presumably, that is Churchill Square being built behind the hoarding that doesn't have Jack Straw's dad up a ladder taking a photo of progress.

This is the façade of which former building?

I know that the line ran through the hartington rd area where the park is - and assume it comes out where screwfix e.t.c is . I have always wondered is there a huge blocked up tunnel in this area ?

That Regency site is excellent.
A "Goldstone" search threw up a few pics I hadn't seen before - and before you know it I've lost another hour that I'll never get back.

I started at Brighton College in 1974 - just five years after that picture was taken and it looks like another world. I knew there was a station but until now had never seen it - it really was quite a big deal wasn't it.

By the time I started at BC I think there may have been a Setyres on the waste ground. Since then has been evolved a lot.

If it's the corner of Eastern Road and Sutherland Road you're on about, there was this for about 120 years...

And when that was demolished Brighton College bought the land and built some new classrooms and the sixth form common room - called The Maltings.

Great picture - again, another I have not seen before. Thanks.

Setyers was on the land that the bingo club is on now.

Which, judging by the photos, is where the Kemp Town station and sidings were.

Aerial view of the area now - you can see The Maltings at the South East corner of the Brighton College plot and the area where the old station and tracks were leading north from Eastern Road where the bingo and their car park are.

I walk that way on my way too work from Queens Park Road every day, and I am amazed by the history in the area. The other end of the railway is evident, as it is William Clarke Park aka The Patch on Hartington Road which is two railway widths wide.

Anyway after 10 years of searching and, trust me on this, please look at the arches on Queens Park. The top one has a rat above the Queens Park sign on the arch. Whilst the bottom arch has a rat on the right hand ledge facing Park Street.

......Flaming awaits, and I am drunk.

I don't mean to hijack your thread TLO - but here is the other end of the tunnel, as Dover says, coming out under Elm Grove as a two line wide green path and then spreading out as it looks like the tracks split - one going down to Lewes Road/Bear Road and the other directly north (?).

And the second image shows where the tunnel connecting Kemp Town Station and the other end at Elm Grove/Hartington probably went.

....and ready to run on the newer buildings on Hartington Road and swing onto the main line by the Lewes Road Sainsburys, and the industrial estate that is behind it.

I've walked through that tunnel - well, from the Kemp Town entrance and up to the closed entrance in the grounds of Elm Grove School. After about 1 minute, it gets very dark and a little bit boring. Reaching the other end is fairly exciting though!

There's quite a bit of random rubbish deposited along its length and some graffiti.

I think, where Down Terrace & Pankhurst Ave meet there's a ventilation hole.
