Ursula von Der Leyen was a failed German defence minister mired in scandal who ended up getting the job after much horse trading behind closed doors to push her candidacy followed by a vote by the European Parliament to endorse the least worse option. She follows in the footsteps of numerous other failed national politicians ending up with cushy jobs in Brussels (see N Kinnock, P Mandelson).

I’m sorry chap, but my information is still correct, while yours is its usual blend of snide insinuation and whataboutery.

Politics is horse trading my friend, the art of the possible. The least worst = the best outcome at that point in space time.

When you say UvdL was a failed defence minister, she did what she was asked to do by the German Chancellor at that time, and was then forced to fall on her sword when that position proved untenable. What she actually did was prove herself loyal and capable of holding her nerve under immense pressure.

She didn’t blame her leadership (see Dorries, JRM et al) or look to divert blame onto other unrelated groups (see the entire post-May Conservative Party) but kept her counsel and proved her trustworthiness at the highest level, with a degree of grace and acceptance.

It is in fact you, my friend, who are once again indulging in whataboutery to try to distract from the fact that you still haven’t answered my question. Which one of the points I raised in my direct reply to you are we supposed to be celebrating?

You have indeed earned the name @Wokeworrier, since anyone with even the most basic awareness of what’s going on is bound to be quite worried about somebody in 2023 claiming “Brexit is brilliant.”

Your detachment from reality is breathtaking.

I have also asked you for Brexit benefits, and the only one you came back with was “our workers are getting pay rises” - but these pay rises are below inflation, so our workers are still getting poorer, not better off.

So, once and for all, instead of posting guff, answer the damn questions:

1. What have the benefits of Brexit been for the British people? I mean tangible real benefits, don’t start prattling on about abstract concepts.

2. Read post 126,475 - it asks what exactly we’re supposed to be celebrating and gives a list of the post-Brexit changes to Britain. Answer the question, what out of that little lot should we be celebrating?

If you can’t or won’t, then perhaps simply leave this thread be, because at present you’re very much giving the impression of a tiresome WUM with absolutely nothing in your locker.

Doesn't really tell us much, prices in the north have caught up with the south but unrelated to Brexit.

Maybe compare the UK biased FTSE250 against other Euro stock indexes, the divergence in performance is shocking as International investors for shunned the UK. Hopefully this will change in time

Brexit economically is self harm, we're poorer now and we won't recover the losses for decades. The cost of the faux sovereignty you fell for hook line and sinker.

You’re not paying attention Fergus. That’s on you, not us. Step out of your mum’s basement occasionally.

The City of London is showing a slow bleed, not an immediate collapse.

House prices are absolutely resilient (supply vs demand) right up until landlords realise that the rents they need to demand to be profitable are out of reach of prospective tenants. Then everyone wants their property to sell first, and needs someone to sell their property to.

There’s pent-up demand in terms of first time buyers, but not infinite pent-up demand. Once word of a trickle starts, there’s the possibility of a flood. That’s the scenario to fear. Prospective buyers sitting back and saying “if I hold off, the prices will be even lower next month.”

Corporate landlords can sell at portfolio level and walk away with nothing worse than a haircut. However, the people who were banking on the property they’re renting out for their pension, but still have to pay the mortgage on it now, could be in real trouble.

Let’s hope not too many have to remortgage in this period and we avoid this scenario that would cause disruption for thousands. It feels like we may have dodged the bullet if mortgage rates continue to fall, but that’s absolutely not a certainty if inflation proves sticky.

I’m glad you feel that everything’s rosy, I’m all for a bit of happiness in the world, but I’m not convinced that your single article from June 2022 captures the current state of the housing market. I’m afraid it also does nothing to suggest that Brexit has been a success for the United Kingdom.

The wage supression argument is completely flawed since it affected a handfull of professions but Brexit made it 100 times worse with chronic shortages of workers where no matter how much you put wages up you can't get the staff anyway so it is harming businesses. There's also the assumption Brits are waiting in the wings to fill these jobs which they are not, and this is the same government who enforced unnecesary austerity and pay freezes for key workers, they still won't pay key workers a fair wage so are all on strike, or they could simply raise the minimum wage or basic living wage but they argue it will cause inflation. A ridiculous juxtaposition

Our remaining industry has been bought by Japan and is choosing to list in New York (ARM) or are reconsidering their investments in the U.K. as we are seen as having a short-term reactionary government prone to sudden changes of direction.

E.g. CRH are the world’s largest supplier of building materials, they were primarily listed in London but have chosen to switch their primary listing from London to New York. The vultures are picking over our bones.

Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin are doing brilliantly out of our acts of self harm. Meanwhile the City of London shrinks in importance and influence.

Business values stability and infrastructure highly. We increasingly have neither.

The EU Commission are absolutely elected and sit a single five year term.

You are wilfully ignorant, as well as only sporadically able to find the shift key.

As for naming them, I can name Ursula von Der Leyen and Mairead McGuinness as she’s the commissioner with overall responsibility for Financial Services and financial stability in the EU. However, even if I couldn’t they are there on trust having convinced the EU’s representatives from every member country of their goodwill and competence.

I don’t know your nationality, but clearly you’re not British yourself since you say “if you don’t like your present government vote them out” this intrigues me, I can’t think of many places cheering Brexit on even now. China? Russia? North Korea?

You’re really flogging that EUSSR line aren’t you? It’s not very good.

I’m not going to provide you with the stats showing City job creation (adjusted vs those lost) pre-Brexit to post-Brexit, nor am I going to go into the minutiae of the EU Commission’s electoral processes. I’m not going to talk about the increases in trading volume at financial centres across Europe (at London’s expense) and I’m not even going to ask where you’re from.

There’s an argument for asking why you hate Europe as a project so much, working together with others is how great things are built, however your personal psychology is clearly fundamentally opposed to union with a bloc whose values we largely share.

So I ask, who better to align ourselves with? Or do you want to keep us weak and separated from others?

Divide and conquer is an old strategy, but still an effective strategy if done right.

Welcome to NSC Mr von der leyen ... seriously though, after serving in a government in office for 15 years and as defence minister for the last 5 years only 20 percent of Germany’s combat helicopters and fewer than 30 percent of its Eurofighter jets could fly, the standard issue rifle couldn't shoot straight if it got hot ... soldiers had to use their mobile phones on exercises because they didn't have the right kit ... but but according to you she was very capable and loyal.

If you want to debate economic self harm especially for the poor you would assess the effect of QE first, we have had over 10 years of it.
