Although it's been tremendous fun reading the days heartfelt contributions and searing political analysis .. :lolol: from the Europhile community on NSC I must highlight one particular nugget of monumental, cretinous, cluelessness in your post ... Ursula von Der Leyen was a failed German defence minister mired in scandal who ended up getting the job after much horse trading behind closed doors to push her candidacy followed by a vote by the European Parliament to endorse the least worse option. She follows in the footsteps of numerous other failed national politicians ending up with cushy jobs in Brussels (see N Kinnock, P Mandelson).
Calling someone cretinous is on a par with spastic. A cretin is a baby born without a functioning thyroid gland, which, if it isn’t found within a week of birth, results in a brain damaged child.
It‘s why new born babies have their heel pricked for the blood test.

I’m sorry chap, but my information is still correct, while yours is its usual blend of snide insinuation and whataboutery.

Politics is horse trading my friend, the art of the possible. The least worst = the best outcome at that point in space time.

When you say UvdL was a failed defence minister, she did what she was asked to do by the German Chancellor at that time, and was then forced to fall on her sword when that position proved untenable. What she actually did was prove herself loyal and capable of holding her nerve under immense pressure.

She didn’t blame her leadership (see Dorries, JRM et al) or look to divert blame onto other unrelated groups (see the entire post-May Conservative Party) but kept her counsel and proved her trustworthiness at the highest level, with a degree of grace and acceptance.

It is in fact you, my friend, who are once again indulging in whataboutery to try to distract from the fact that you still haven’t answered my question. Which one of the points I raised in my direct reply to you are we supposed to be celebrating?

You have indeed earned the name @Wokeworrier, since anyone with even the most basic awareness of what’s going on is bound to be quite worried about somebody in 2023 claiming “Brexit is brilliant.”

Your detachment from reality is breathtaking.

I have also asked you for Brexit benefits, and the only one you came back with was “our workers are getting pay rises” - but these pay rises are below inflation, so our workers are still getting poorer, not better off.

So, once and for all, instead of posting guff, answer the damn questions:

1. What have the benefits of Brexit been for the British people? I mean tangible real benefits, don’t start prattling on about abstract concepts.

2. Read post 126,475 - it asks what exactly we’re supposed to be celebrating and gives a list of the post-Brexit changes to Britain. Answer the question, what out of that little lot should we be celebrating?

If you can’t or won’t, then perhaps simply leave this thread be, because at present you’re very much giving the impression of a tiresome WUM with absolutely nothing in your locker.

And as Brexit proves to be the utter and complete disaster that was always predicted, a couple of 'well we won' and desperate 'but whatabout's' are the sum total from the posters so ardently pushing the Brexit campaign for year after year and how great it would be.

A single benefit way beyond their abilities, It would be hilarious if they had only f***ed over themselves with their naivety and ignorance and not millions of innocent people who never wanted this

Doesn't really tell us much, prices in the north have caught up with the south but unrelated to Brexit.

Maybe compare the UK biased FTSE250 against other Euro stock indexes, the divergence in performance is shocking as International investors for shunned the UK. Hopefully this will change in time

You’re not paying attention Fergus. That’s on you, not us. Step out of your mum’s basement occasionally.

The City of London is showing a slow bleed, not an immediate collapse.

House prices are absolutely resilient (supply vs demand) right up until landlords realise that the rents they need to demand to be profitable are out of reach of prospective tenants. Then everyone wants their property to sell first, and needs someone to sell their property to.

There’s pent-up demand in terms of first time buyers, but not infinite pent-up demand. Once word of a trickle starts, there’s the possibility of a flood. That’s the scenario to fear. Prospective buyers sitting back and saying “if I hold off, the prices will be even lower next month.”

Corporate landlords can sell at portfolio level and walk away with nothing worse than a haircut. However, the people who were banking on the property they’re renting out for their pension, but still have to pay the mortgage on it now, could be in real trouble.

Let’s hope not too many have to remortgage in this period and we avoid this scenario that would cause disruption for thousands. It feels like we may have dodged the bullet if mortgage rates continue to fall, but that’s absolutely not a certainty if inflation proves sticky.

I’m glad you feel that everything’s rosy, I’m all for a bit of happiness in the world, but I’m not convinced that your single article from June 2022 captures the current state of the housing market. I’m afraid it also does nothing to suggest that Brexit has been a success for the United Kingdom.

The wage supression argument is completely flawed since it affected a handfull of professions but Brexit made it 100 times worse with chronic shortages of workers where no matter how much you put wages up you can't get the staff anyway so it is harming businesses. There's also the assumption Brits are waiting in the wings to fill these jobs which they are not, and this is the same government who enforced unnecesary austerity and pay freezes for key workers, they still won't pay key workers a fair wage so are all on strike, or they could simply raise the minimum wage or basic living wage but they argue it will cause inflation. A ridiculous juxtaposition

Nobody wants Brexit taz, we’re saddled with it. Nobody of any party wants to talk about it.

Our remaining industry has been bought by Japan and is choosing to list in New York (ARM) or are reconsidering their investments in the U.K. as we are seen as having a short-term reactionary government prone to sudden changes of direction.

E.g. CRH are the world’s largest supplier of building materials, they were primarily listed in London but have chosen to switch their primary listing from London to New York. The vultures are picking over our bones.

Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin are doing brilliantly out of our acts of self harm. Meanwhile the City of London shrinks in importance and influence.

Business values stability and infrastructure highly. We increasingly have neither.

The EU Commission are absolutely elected and sit a single five year term.

You are wilfully ignorant, as well as only sporadically able to find the shift key.

As for naming them, I can name Ursula von Der Leyen and Mairead McGuinness as she’s the commissioner with overall responsibility for Financial Services and financial stability in the EU. However, even if I couldn’t they are there on trust having convinced the EU’s representatives from every member country of their goodwill and competence.

I don’t know your nationality, but clearly you’re not British yourself since you say “if you don’t like your present government vote them out” this intrigues me, I can’t think of many places cheering Brexit on even now. China? Russia? North Korea?
Fact there has been 45,000 new jobs created in Londons financial markets since brexit, if you dont have to rely on Brussels propaganda outlet euro news,, there is nothing unusual about a company having duel listings on stock markets, London easily still has the crown when it comes to investment opportunities or want investment,, here some other facts,, no member of the European commission is voted on, every member of the EU commission takes an oath that they will base all decisions on the overall good of the EU even if it's damaging to the country that they personally represent, the European Parliament can only discuss what the EU commission has set before them,, the EU commission can overrule any decision by the European Parliament, the European Parliament can not put forward any proposal of its own,, just stop trying to drag the UK back to the one state EUSSR, with its stupid flag, capital in Brussels, politburo commission and life time president, many died trying to keep this country free

You’re really flogging that EUSSR line aren’t you? It’s not very good.

I’m not going to provide you with the stats showing City job creation (adjusted vs those lost) pre-Brexit to post-Brexit, nor am I going to go into the minutiae of the EU Commission’s electoral processes. I’m not going to talk about the increases in trading volume at financial centres across Europe (at London’s expense) and I’m not even going to ask where you’re from.

There’s an argument for asking why you hate Europe as a project so much, working together with others is how great things are built, however your personal psychology is clearly fundamentally opposed to union with a bloc whose values we largely share.

So I ask, who better to align ourselves with? Or do you want to keep us weak and separated from others?

Divide and conquer is an old strategy, but still an effective strategy if done right.

Yeah? Morgan McKinley UK managing director, Hakan Enver, doesn't seem to agree:

'“Financial services and banks have had a strong 2022 and continued to hire throughout the year. Jobs available in the City increased by 16% in 2022 compared to 2021 but is noticeably less than the peak year of 2016. The number of financial services jobs in London has been shrinking over recent years with a shift in jobs due to Brexit and onshoring of business to other British cities as well as further afield to mainland Europe.”

Welcome to NSC Mr von der leyen ... seriously though, after serving in a government in office for 15 years and as defence minister for the last 5 years only 20 percent of Germany’s combat helicopters and fewer than 30 percent of its Eurofighter jets could fly, the standard issue rifle couldn't shoot straight if it got hot ... soldiers had to use their mobile phones on exercises because they didn't have the right kit ... but but according to you she was very capable and loyal.

If you want to debate economic self harm especially for the poor you would assess the effect of QE first, we have had over 10 years of it.

https://www.omfif.org/2022/12/uk-treasury-faces-steep-price-for-quantitative-easing-policy/

You keep shitting the bed about Brexit, compared to QE and the pandemic splurge that we will have to sustain for decades, Brexit is like a man who has lost his arms in a haybaler moaning about an ingrowing toenail.

Too many economic mice on here.
