Low Skill levels?

You've obviously never played the game so why type such uneducated rubbish?

I'm sorry but it's true. My Aussie 'soccer' playing mate is in agreement and I have seen plenty of it on TV. I am a massive sports fan who appreciates sports with high skill levels, hence I am a massive football and cricket fan as well as player. Aussie rules doesn't tick any boxes for me in that regard. I'd lump it in with Rugby League in the 'appreciation of athletcism' box.

So your mate plays soccer. So he's biased then. That's how it works out here.

I can find 50 Iriishmen who have played AFL, Soccer and Gaelic who will refute your mates claim.

The athelticism required to play AFL puts soccer players to shame as does the skill levels required.

The average soccer midfielder runs 15km a game. The average AFL midfielder runs 20km.
That doesnt take into account the AFL player gets smashed in tackles while doing this.

The shape of the ball also means it takes greater skill to kick it and bounce it while running at high speeds.

Taking a mark like a GK does when coming out for a high ball is more difficult as unlike the GK the AFL player is allowed to be smashed into as long as you dont make head high contact.

So lets see what skills are required for soccer

Running
Tackling
Passing
Goal keeping
throw ins

for Aussie rules

running
tackling
marking
kicking/passing
handballing
sheparding
ruck work and hit outs

The skill set of the AFL player is much broader than that of a soccer player.

As i said i appreciate both sports, but our best AFL players are far far better athldtes than our best soccer players and more skilful.

Lighten up mate, you're just being wound up.

I know they are taking the piss.

But there are a few people who read these threads who might learn something from someone who loves both codes

For the record Rugby League is the least skilful pile of crap football there is

It's the unseen stuff with football. Guile, vision, flair......

If by better athletes you mean gym freaks who are bulked up to the max, then yes, well done.

If you want to start getting into argument about AFL players being more skilful than footballers then you must be pissed. Ridiculous.

Basic rules - using your hands is easier than using your feet. Kicking an egg into a MASSIVE gap isnt an argument either.

Oh and I saw some Aussie rules football on eurosport the other day. What a joke of a game it is, just completely random. I'm guessing it's for the thick kids that can't quite grasp the rules of rugby league.

Unseen stuff like Vision and Flair?

Not being smart or rude but you haven't watched many games of AFL if you think there's none of that in AFL.

Using both your feet AND you hands going by your theory then means more skill levels required.

If all you have to concentrate is on foot skills then its a single skill set as compared to a duel skill set of foot and hand.

So learning two skill sets is more difficult.

Thats the basic premise you seem to be indicating.

You are so deluded it's untrue. This is Australian arrogance at it's worst. A game played exclusively (PROPERLY that is) in Australia by a load of meatheads IS NOT a more skilful game than soccer played and loved the world over by billions of people - this isn't even an argument.

I'm not deluded.

I've played Soccer, Gaelic Football and AFL in my time at school and socially.

Soccer was by far the easiest to be able to run onto a pitch and play.

But that doesnt mean I'm slagging soccer off because i love watching it and still play indoor soccer.

But at least my argument comes from having played various codes and having experienced first hand what it takes to play each sport.

Yours is based soley on seeing it on "tv"

Popularity has nothing to do with the argument.

Table Tennis is one of the the worlds most popular sport and yet you and I can pick up a paddle and have a game without a problem.

INteresting debate. Not sure how relevant it is......but to be fair Australians, Kiwis etc are surely just backward colonials who are bound to excel in running round a sand pit / mudpatch chasing a ball wearing tramps cast offs?

Just a thought like.

Utter Bullshit.

The vast majority of ANZACS were born and bred Aussies and Kiwis.

Now mate you are obviously very nationalistic and pro Ozzie but no need to re write history. If you are at school then ask your history teacher. Most ANZACS, just like Rolf Harris's parents that were in the ANZACS were born and bred in the UK and Ireland, and they signed up for the army in Oz. By the way Australian Rules Football:lolol:

I find AFL shite frankly, Melbourne types with a no brain no pain mentality, running round in tight shorts hugging each other...don't believe anything Tyrone says.....

Anyhow...I'm all up for a friendly rivalry with the English. Its fantastic that we came from here and obviously have learnt a few things ;-) aside from the fact we spend our lives playing sport as the weather is so condusive...

What I don't agree with is people who feel it appropriate to take it that one step too far...Words like C*nt which have been levelled on here, convict gets reeled out often as does "you're English anyhow"...its like childish racism and frankly all it is is jealousy. Whats most disspointing on here is that one of Britains finest coppers who posts on here finds it acceptable to roll out this form of childish vilification, really is very dissapointing.

Go figure...
