Sky: Robins reject Greer offer

Skysports.com understands Swindon Town have rejected a second offer from Brighton & Hove Albion for Gordon Greer.

Brighton tried to sign the Scot at the end of last season and have now returned with a £250,000 bid for the 29-year-old.

However, the Robins have knocked back the latest offer from their League One rivals as they look to hang on to the centre-half.

Greer has 12 months remaining on his contract at the County Ground and was a virtual ever-present in the Swindon team last season following his arrival from Doncaster Rovers.

He made 53 appearances in all competitions for Danny Wilson's side, but missed the play-off final defeat by Millwall through suspension after being sent off in the semi-final against Charlton Athletic.

I would estimate that on an opening offer we must have a bit of room to manouvre. Maybe up to 350k?

Probably way off the mark. But with a year to go, if he says he wants to go we may have a chance

Do we need another centrehalf? El Abd, Elphick, Tunnicliffe and Dunk (who was excellent at MK Dons indeed a rather inebriated XIV eye kept getting him and Elphick mixed up)

so, we do have some capital funds.

that's a big call for Swindon, he'll go on a free in less than 50 games time, so they're vauing him at £5000 per game (£250k divided by 50 games) plus the cost of his wage, which must be £4000pw plus. So they're valuing him at £9k per game plus for the coming season!

We'll go back with £275k I sense - they can't go much further on him surely?

Our problem over the last couple of seasons is that we have been shit house at the back. By all accounts Greer is immense and will solve all the problems.

In Greer we are also buying a captain, we dont have one at the moment, and no real obvious choise of one either

Swindon will have to make a counter offer to Greer- extended contract on better money and to be honest they can afford to do so. I doubt this deal will go any further and there are plenty more centre backs available

Do we really need another centre back? Maybe if we could up the offer to 300,000 or 350,000. Then maybe Swindon might accept it, but it don't solve our midfield problem.

In a word, yes.

Elphick, El-Abd, Tunnicliffe and Dunk are not four centre backs that make you think, promotion contenders.

We still have Dicker and Navarro in midfield. We're obviously looking to strengthen there with offers for Prutton and Hendrie.

Wilson's not going to want to let him go, it would be silly, as it seems they don't need the money anyway. However, that is a large bid for a 29 year old - so the signs are good, if we're willing to spend that much on a CB (and we're setting our targets that high).

Yep a quality experienced centre half is needed. Need 4 players battling it out for a spot in there.

Swindon can afford to keep him should they wish. It'll come down to what the player wants imo.

What about Gary Doherty who was released by Norwich?

If we could get him he'd be just as good if not better than Greer. 3rd best player in the side of the runaway champions. Would imagine a lot of Championship clubs would be interested, still think its madness Norwich let him go.

You haven't factored in the cost of a replacement or his wages though...

Gus is doing what he did when he came in building from the back - CB's can play untill mid 30's so 29 is probably a CB's prime.

A lot of money, IMHO... is there an alternative?

Quite a bit of cash to splash on someone with only a season left on his contract Gus must rate him quite a bit. Argus hinted at more players coming in this week as well
