Basically indicates not going as well as Putin would hope, badly planned logistic wise and possibly facing more resistance from civilians than expected. Plus Russian forces on the ground possibly demotivated / demoralised with not all expecting they were going to war to fight their own.

But some caution as expected significant numbers could still be 20km away from Kiev so could quickly change

Seeing as the Ukraine are arming their citizens with AK47's it means the Russian Army is basically going to have to kill off masses of civilians for this to pan out the way Putin planned.

Probably not what most Russian Soldiers joined up for?

Fingers crossed. Might just be a western narrative (doubtless one poster in particular will be along to say so shortly) but it doesn’t feel like the Russian army is excelling itself.

the Russians have failed to take several cities in the east, Kharkiv and Sumy in particular. these are a few dozen miles inside the border. seems Russians failed to break through the "line of contact" in Donbas region and in southern Donetsk region the city of Mariupol has held out. its only day two but Ukrainians have done well, especially with little to no air cover.

only really a move north out of Crimea has successful. and Kyiv, seems the Ukrainians hadnt really accounted fully for forces from Belarus, though reckon must have slowed them down that they've taken this long to get to to the outskirts.

A spokesman for Ukrainian President Zelensky has just said the country is prepared to hold ceasefire and peace talks with Russia immediately.

He said Russian and Ukrainian officials are currently discussing a time and place for talks to be held.

I won’t hold my breath on this, as I fear Putins demands are probably ridiculous, I would not expect Zelensky to be able to leave any meeting unless held in a safe neutral area. I also hope he does not relinquish any power to Russia, The Ukrainian does not and should not be under anyones rule, other than their own.

think a little deeper. you're sent off to liberate fellow Slavs from western control, to re-establish a great Russian empire. you get there and find they are not throwing flowers to liberators but shooting back. i'd say thats not what you sign up for but as a conscript you didnt. so you've been sent to shoot the people suppose to help? not going to be enthusiatic about the job at the very least, and even the professionals will be wondering whats going on.

Best case this massively backfired in Putin’s face. But there seems a narrow path to that eventuality and a lot of death.

Just how great Russia could be, all this wasted talent used by the Russian leaders to destroy and disrupt others livelihoods and freedoms. Rather than push Russia forward in a progressive manor looking forward rather than backwards.

Lot of talk this evening that China is set to abstain from the vote against Russia at the UN. It will be vetoed by Russia, obviously, but looks like Moscow is increasingly isolated and fears of a Beijing - Moscow alliance look somewhat dashed. This is potentially a huge diplomatic moment.

Quoted from the BBC.
Maybe reports of a stuttering Russia and Ukrainian resistance are leading all parties hopefully back to the table for peace. Nothing but a tragic loss of life achieved.
May yet just be more Russian games of “peace though” will believe it when I see it

Any ceasefire at this point would mean the offensive would stop at current positions. Putin would take that, he has "prevented genocide " and told them naughty Ukrainians to behave and he has stolen another big chunk of Ukraine that will never be handed back.

Do you know why it is that China and Russia always seem to be uneasy of each other. On the face of it they should be strong allies, Communist countries each of which didn't like the US. And yet they are rarely close to each other.

Part of it is festering resentment and mistrust following the Sino-Soviet split during the Cold War. They also rival each other in the Far East to some extent, albeit not something covered a lot in the media in the west.

Russia hardly Communist these days, rather more of a Fascist Regime?

Not sure the Chinese are particularly communist themselves either TBH, other than in name.
