Oddly enough, I was digging through a vast amount of boxes in storage and came across (there was a picture of Natalie Imbruglia on the front) a Times insert "How to run". There is some great stuff in it. I'll make some photo copies and send you the insert, if you wish.

Just wanted to say very well done and a thank you! Because of YOU, I bought some proper running shoes and intend to follow the 8 week plan linked to the letter. Hope to be able to check back here in a couple of weeks for more inspiration and updates on how you're doing

Don't just get any old pair of running trainers either, you could do a lot worse than go to this place.

They will look at how you run, where you need support and look at trainers most suitable.

shoeguide

Went there myself recently. Very impressed with the guy's knowledge. Trainers were cheaper than I expected - in fact, because of my gait, he decided the cheaper pair of two I tried would be better for my flat feet. So not hard sell at all. Top shop.

Oh Dear, due too do second of the three jog/walks in morning but first one has left shins aching. Looks like to much shock impact on my poor old legs, walk instead untill another stone off.

Keep posting, inspirational to hear!! As a 'slim-basterd' whose gradually becoing a 'fat-bastard' through inactivity it inspired me to go for a run last night.

Week 1 Run one min, walk 90 seconds. Repeat eight times. Do three times a week

Well today was my second walk/jog of the week, delayed by a day due to very aching shins and am also going to repeat week one, as am carrying so much extra weight that i fel it advisable. Also not worrying unduly about times as its all about fitness at the moment. The body not done anything like this for years so gently does it. Anyway, i completed it this morning, albeit with varying jog/walk ratios on a couple of stretches, but happy to have completed it. Third of the week is Saturday although not worried about making it Sunday rather than do myslf an injury

Doesnt matter how often you repeat the weeks, its about getting in the habit of regulary doing some exercise. Agree with someone earlier who said just slow down even if its only slightly above walking pace, this programme is all about training your body to start running/moving and it really does work for anyone, just keep going out and doing it/repeating it, especially when you head tells you to watch TV instead.

I now just run to audio books, Jo Nesbo has got me through a few 5k's recently, highly recommend sticking to this 'couch to 5K' its great as you start to tick the days/ weeks off, keep going.

Book just arrived from amazon today, quick look tells me its going to be great read. Ta Hiney

You're welcome squire.

My wife used it as part of her weight loss regime a few years. She loved the fact that it was so easy to build up from basically a quick walk to a run without her really knowing it.

Good luck

The program set out in the "Running made Easy" is similar to the one i have started but i reckon it will be better for me, given as am so friggin unfit. Am sure both will work out in the long run though. So am going to start over on Friday. It is run 1 min, walk 3 mins and repeat 3 more times (16 mins). Its every other day. The increase each week is not too great and allied with weight loss I reckon it winner.Slightly more gradual in its increase but will suit me.
Again thanks to all for support and ideas

Well done on your achievement so far.

I have never been a big fan of jogging personally as i find it boring and more importantly it can't be good on yer knees hips etc.
So i would go dumbells and low impact as you will need to tighten up a bit if poss.I would have thought swimming has got to be your best option.

Keep it going but don't let people push you into Xmas Cake and all the rest of that traditional crap and your come out feeling even better if you can keep it coming off over the xmas hols.

Onwards and upwards.

PS i have never made a living at this!!

Good stuff h61, lots of us rooting for you.

You've inspired me to play 5 aside again at 48! I expect to be totally shattered by 9pm tonight but realise I should do it while i still can.

Keep looking for that bike, it's a great way to get fit and to get around.

0700 and just back from my first properly timed and measure 60 mins brisk walk (well brisk for me at any rate) It covered 6 km-6662 steps-6607 in aerobic-and I make that around 3.75 miles. Knew I had done it by the end, but a pretty good feeling. Was uneventful walk although the country part of it nearly found me slipping into a ditch! jumping out of my skin when a cock crowed about 50 yards from me, and i nice encounter with Mr Fox. My favourite time to walk.As earlier posted I am going to do the 12 week program starting monday. Thanks to all who are being so supportive, and for the pm's received

Was right plank yesterday, got totally carried away with walking during the day, ignoring that i was taking part in a procession that evening, by time i limped home, with a bruised foot and aching limbs, i had 24 km on the pedometer. may have burned a few cals but certainly makes the monday, day one of the 12 week running program a worrying thought . really must learn that gently gently is the way, its working with diet so gotta get out of this all or nothing mindset. thanks again guys for all the pm's etc

In my own strange world
I run a fair bit,and invested in a decent pair of cushioned trainers from a specialist sports shop, expensive but they really do make a big difference and again try,if possible to run on soft grass.I found when I first started running I would get excessively hot, so preferred cool rainy days, but the biggest hurdle to overcome is the one in your head which will try to find every excuse under the sun not to run.Stick at it,it is hard at first but only gets better the more you go,good luck I hope it works well for you.

Day 1 Week 1...here goes

Found ideal spot to do this, a park just behind my flat that is not too busy, so don't feel too self conscious. I nice size route too as a circuit takes in the 1 minute jog and 3 minute walk almost exactly, so a gentle 4 laps for starters. Glad i took the advice of you all as to try to do it on grass! (maybe speed would have been better!). As for footwear that's going to have to wait, so its the basic Hi-Tec silver shadows I am afraid. Well it went okay, warmed up and down as advised and although the last leg was a bit hard, for a first session it went well and feel good for doing it. So its rest day tomorrow and same again Wednesday
