OK, US - here are some serious suggestions:

Recently

Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood
and agree with you 100% re Bruno Ganz in Downfall.

Otherwise, some of the obvious ones:

De Niro in Taxi Driver & Raging Bull.
Cagney in White Heat

Judi Dench in just about anything, but I thought she was particularly good in Mrs Brown.

No were getting serious

Also Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley in Schindler's list and the latter in Gandhi. I think the best trio of performances in one film was Fiennes, Neeson and Kingsley in Schindler's List. Absolutely criminal none of them won an Oscar especially Fiennes who was overlooked by Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugutive for heaven's sake. The greatest ever Oscar travesty in my opinion.

Ralph Fiennes - Count Laszlo de Almasy - the English Patient
Ralph Fiennes - Lenny Nero - Strange Days - A criminally underated film, watch it, its rather good.

Hoffman / Olivier film was Marathon Man, Dave, and a great call!

Agree with US (stop the press! ;) ) about the overlooking of the actors in Schindler's List, despite all it's Oscar success.

in all honesty I'd have 4.

Richard Burton - Medusa Touch
Alec Guinness - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
James Stewart - Harvey
Dennis Price - Kind Hearts and Coronets

EDIT - and maybe Brad Pitt in Fight Club and Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy
