The rule says all cars unlap or no cars unlap. That decision is at Masi's discretion. If there is a rule that says only the cars between the leader and the second car must unlap then that rule needs to be shown. Mercedes seem to believe that rule does not exist.

He virtually tied Hamiltons legs together to finish a sprint race. Can’t see it being overturned though.

Mercedes have lodged a complaint.

Presumably, given the strength of feeling from Mercedes, if the roles were reversed, Lewis would have just sat behind Max and allowed him to take the chequered flag and world championship?

I think they’d have expected Red Bull to appeal. This is a bit like saying that we as fans would expect a soft penalty not to be given against us so shouldn’t shout for one in our favour.

Mercedes making an official protest apparently.

I'm not sure that if it proves successful it'll add anything to the season/competition.

It'll be a tarnished title whichever way it goes. Which is a real shame because it has been a magnificent season right up until Latifi ****ed it.

FIA got what they wanted. Total fix.
Lewis was way ahead until safely cars. Last one was a total set up.

I think anyone who lost under those circumstances would feel aggrieved Red Bull or any other team.
Red bull this time did what any other team would have done given the circumstances.
The issue Is with the Mercedes and the FIA as it would be with any other team, where rules don’t appeared to have been followed by the race director.

Either it's a valid appeal or not. I'm far from an expert, but it seems they have some basis for saying someone made a mistake.

I expect red bull would have done the same if the race officials had cocked up, like they seemingly have

Surely it wouldn't come to that...

As Mercedes know that what happened was wrong - and that applies whether you benefit from it or otherwise - they'd have instructed Lewis to sit behind Max and allowed him to take the rightful win.

Only, of course they wouldn't. Lewis would have gone for the win in the same way Max did.

I'm just trying to illustrate my point that I think both teams are remarkably similar and would generally do the same thing (moan to all and sundry and lodge a complaint if they can) if they were on the receiving end of something they feel unjust.

Fully agree on both counts.

Exactly. The protest clearly isn’t with RB - they’ve done nothing wrong and no suggestion they have. But if a SC is deployed and you have a set of rules that determines if you pit or not, then those rules change at the drop of a hat - you have a significant reason for protest.

The others drivers can’t believe it. Tells a story.

I think the FIA/Masi are in trouble here. They bent the rules to get the race underway. There should have been an extra lap before the safety car went into the pits:

“There is also this part of that article: "Unless clerk of the course considers the presence of the safety car is still necessary, once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap." There was no lap in between.”

Whilst I can’t see them taking this away from Max, it’s going to set an unfortunate precedent of race directors breaking the rules that might well see a lot of people switch off.

I don’t think it was a mistake. I think they knew exactly what they were doing.
