Ashley Barnes - Your opinion

Well I'm quite happy with his performance so far. I think he makes good runs off the ball, he's linking up well with our midfield and seems comfortable playing just behind CMS. And of course he's weighed in with a few goals.

Now you're saying, "take away the goals". Clearly, I'm not going to be as happy with him, as that is a fundamental part of his game. But that's not a fair way to judge him. If you want to be fair, you could ask us to replace his goals with a scenario where he has created 4 or 5 additional chances, maybe 2 or 3, and made 2 or 3 goaline clearances or something. But taking away one of the main reasons he is there is ridiculous.
What I am trying to say is, apart from the one on Saturday which was a good finish to a good move, the other 3 of which two were penalties were very saveable. If CMS was there in the cup game, he may well have taken the pens, so thats two goals, and the long range one at Cardiff, while it looked good, really should have saved, so fair enough, maybe I should have said one or two goals. Had he not got the rub of the green, and Saturday was his first goal of the season, what I am trying to say is, would people be so forgiving, when his performances would have been exactly the same?

I still hope he comes good, but nothing I have seen this season, suggests to me that he will. (Now watch as he bags a hat-trick tonight!!)

The Gillingham penalty was quality placed and very few keepers would have saved that unless they dived that way and stretched that high to save it. The other i agree with. Saying that though how do you know that Barnes didn't make eye contact with the other side of the goal and the keeper spotted it and so dived that way which sent him the wrong way ?

When/where did he say that, specifically? Genuinely interested as I've missed that.
Sorry maybe not the summer, but towards the end of last season he said he would have to consider buying a dead ball specialist for penalties and free kicks. I couldn't point you to the exact interview, but recall him saying it.

Wow. What a post. Thats clears every thing up then.

Accepted I was being totally ridiculous and I can admit that. Contrast that with your own position. You can't be happy until we start losing and/or our leading scorer gets dropped. All to satisfy yourself that yes you were right Barnes is shit. Meanwhile the rest of us are getting on with enjoying the footballing spectacle.

So ridiculous.

So the penalties don't count, and the 30 yarder was lucky, and he's 'had the rub of the green'?

You could equally argue, that if he'd truly had the rub of the green, his effort against Donny wouldn't have been cleared off the line, and he'd have had a deserved penalty on Saturday. So by similar pointless conjecture, he should REALLY be on 6 from 5 games.

I'm aghast at some of the utter nonsense I'm reading. He's an excellent team player who massivly helps us play in the way we do and on top of that, chips in with a decent number of goals too.

Other strikers might be better goal scorers, or better at holding the ball up, but there is a lot more to the game than that. There's a reason Sandaza didn't get much of a look in last season, and it was nothing to do with his ability to stick the ball in the net.

I think the Gillingham penatly was placed perfect for the keeper had he gone that way. The only saving grace on that one may have been the power, which suggests AShkeys mind was made up and not placed on the keepers reaction.

With regards eye contact, its all bluff and double bluff, which sort of brings in back into 50/50 and luck again. I wouldn't have though Championship quailty keepers are sold on players eyes. It will be interesting to see AShley next pen. Whether or not the keeper stands up and dives late or not, but hopefully it'll be tucked into the corner with pace so it wont matter. With the amount of pre-match information gathered these days, I would be very surprised to see Ashley take another penalty like he has so far, and get away with it.

Napoleon once said "Give me lucky generals, not clever ones".

The same principle applies to goalscorers perhaps?

Mr Burns you really have to change the record now fella.

1) He's our top scorer after having scored a shed load during our league one rout last year.
2) He is a natural goalscorer and he has attributes, while perhaps not immediately obvious, are there upon deeper inspection.
3) The facts speak for themselves, they really do.

Your argument basically consists of an inability to realise that he's great at dropping of the last defender. Great at reading an attack. Great at dropping into a winger position (nb not role) You basically argue if he scores a great goal it's a fluke, if he scores a tap in it was lucky and not his own doing... oh and penalties, well they just plain old don't count. It's getting silly.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Turkey again.

There is a reason for this. Spot on.

Getting quite tired of all this "if my auntie had bollocks" nonsense to be honest, so this is where I stand: Poyet has brought in CMS to build a team around, and Hoskins with a view to providing Barnes with competition to partner him. I think he'd prefer to have had Hoskins fit at the start of the season but even then I'm not sure he'd have played him at Barnes' expense because Barnes did the job asked of him last season and deserved his chance to start. Barnes has scored 4 in 5 including two pens, and has played well in most of that time (he was average against Pompey apparently).

There is no way Poyet will drop Barnes for Hoskins, as an ever present in a team that has won 4 and drawn 1 of its five games this season. Even if he wanted to, he probably wouldn't because that would be detrimental in the long term as it would send out the wrong message. The same goes for Dunk. The only player who has been dropped (deservedly) is Lua Lua and I doubt that is permanent either because Noone will suffer a drop in form at some point I suspect.

mmmm dont recall saying that. I thought he "tap in" was the best goal he's scored this season. Penalties are penalties are should be scored, abeit I dont think his two have been convining, the long range one at Cardiff should really have been saved (think of the grief Casper would get if he let simlair one in) his "tap in" was a great run to end of a great worked dead ball. I'll praise him to the cows come home on his "tap in" against Blackpool. A great goal rounding of a great move.

Only going to post once on this thread but I do love how your argument has now moved onto criticising his penalty technique after he has scored two in two and to also take away the goal he scored at Cardiff as the keeper "should have saved it". You may have started out with some fairly sound reasoning for your criticism of Barnes when you first started that thread, but now it's rumbled on as long as it has you just seem to have dug yourself in deeper and deeper and become so warped that your logic is completely amiss.
