    Car question

Update: I've found a garage that will fit a secondhand engine for around £1700. Has anyone any experience or advice on this – is it too risky, or would you go for it? My dilemma is whether this is better than buying another car (£4000 ish) or renting for a year (£4800ish).

    Car question

Thanks for all the advice guys. You've confirmed what I pretty much already knew, but it's good to know for sure. Scarp value is probably the only answer. And yup Vegas Seagull, if it still moved I would stage an accident, but sadly not even that's possible now. (And thanks for the offer...

    Car question

My car died on New Years Eve. Shit finish to a shit year. Garages say engine is a write-off due to mechanical problems. One place hazarded a guess at £2500+ repairs, another said not to bother. I paid £4200 for the car a year ago. Is there any chance of getting anything out of insurance for...

    Nativity season

Live in a Muslim country, and our son's nursery just did a Christmas concert. Ok it was Santa and Rudolph songs rather than Jospeh and Mary stuff, but still there's ample tolerance over here. And when it was UAE National Day the other week, they all dressed in red white and green and did stuff...

    still no vicente then

FFS. It's simple. He's match fit but not fit in a way that means he could play a match. For that he needs to get fit by playing matches, but obviously he can't do that until he's fit in a match fit way. Which requires fitness. But not matches. They come later. But start first.

Watching Albion from the opposition end

The only way I could get into a FA Cup game at the Goldstone once was to go in with the Scousers in the East Terrace. Had to stifle my delight when Byrne scored for us, and pretend to be mildly pleased when Liverpool won it in ET. Not something I ever intend to repeat.

Little bands no one's ever heard of.

Not really a band, but I always loved Mary Margaret o'Hara's voice. Stunning, unique. And then I saw her dance. Like an Energiser Bunny drunk on cheap vodka, constantly punching some invisible dwarf who is apparently trying to steal her mike stand. Kinda ruined the mystique. But still...

Little bands no one's ever heard of.

Mm. So many to go for. How about Salem 66? I always had a weakness for the "three girls plus male drummer, from Boston" line-up, but Throwing Muses just aren't obscure enough... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaWlBgOuP8k

    Worst ever International Tournament?

2010 World Cup. The most dispiriting and feeble performance England have ever put up. Has put me off following the national team for a LONG time. Plus, as others have said, the ****ing vuvuzelas and generally uninspiring games.

    Dumb question about cars

Thanks for the help. I've done some more research: "All new vehicles from all manufacturers imported into the UAE are required by law to have a 120km/h speed alarm. The dumb thing is, once they've been imported, there are no further checks to see if the alarm works, ever! So, many people go and...
