What an utterly depressing thread this is. I'm always astonished by the amount of hateful people on this board.

Most incredibly, Questions - a user who hounded every post I made for months purely because I once claimed "Paki" was a racist term - is talking an UNBELIEVABLE amount of sense.

Hello Chesney

It has to be British History because surprise surprise this is Britain.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I think this comment explains a lot about you. I pity you, I don't hate. You are so stupid you should be kept in a cage.

So children should never - EVER - be taught anything historical if it doesn't directly involve Britain then?

Think me and you are on the same side here mate so I hesitate to say this, but that list isn't the curriculum - it looks like a particular school's scheme of work chosen to incorporate the curriculum.

Those are on the national curriculum website as key topics to cover. Those topics will be chosen out a list of options, but will cover aspecvts of all history, British or otherwise. The curriculum is a list of topics to cover and the lists on here are the choices that school have made. It will then be up to the teacher to teach that topic in an interesting way.

Unit 10. France 1789-94 why was there a revolution?

What a disgrace. The teachers, nay the GOVERNMENT, clearly have a racial agenda here. They want to FORCE us all to become FRENCH. This is happening all over the country and the liberal do-gooder sandal wearing PC Brigade are trying to sweep it under the (PROBABLY MOROCCAN) carpet.

You don't hate. I think your comments about me on another thread were rather hatefull. I was hurt

I was pointing out that if one lives in Briatin the main subject should be British history. Nibble has put my mind at rest about this

Unit 10. What can we find out about ancient Egypt from what has survived?

DISGRACE. Why only talk about EGYPT? What about other countries - i.e. ones which aren't just full of BLACK types. The teachers, nay the GOVERNMENT, clearly have a racial agenda here. This is happening all over the country and the liberal do-gooder sandal wearing PC Brigade are trying to etc etc

I think they're suggested examples as opposed to the topics to be chosedn from - the curriculum itself nowdays (the new one thats come in this last year or so) is particularly vague, a teacher could theoretically teach very few different subjects in terms of content. But yeah point is that there are still provisions for British studies, and that I would imagine pretty much every school chooses to exercise these as the majority of their workscheme.

One of the things you notice about our allies across the Atlantic is that they are utterly clueless about anybody else's history or geography. It's a good job that American History is such a small subject or they'd be buggered by that. Their own geography they usually are.

It's a good thing that our schools attempt to introduce pupils to other nations and their cultures, it's one reason why I tend to feel superior to the average American.

I'm sorry but what is the actual evidence that this is going on all across London?

You are ten years old in an SE London junior school. You are given the choice of

Rosa Parks
Martin Luther King
Nelson Mandela

Who do you chose? Or do you say oh I would prefer to do something else there is obviously a racial agenda to this, is this any way for ten year olds to be educated? Or do you just get on with it oblivious to how you at TEN, are being manipulated by well meaning but idiotic racists.

Anyone who cares to tell me this isnt happening all over London and we are lucky to live in such a tolerant society and oh how smugly say we are streets ahead of America in our enlightened race relations, if so please feel free to state your reasons for these views below.

It's called education you plonker. Why shouldn't human racial history be a part of a child's curriculum? Emancipation, wars, geographical rights of government - all part of history that is the foundation of all our todays.
In a thousand years mankind might look upon the bonds and social mores of racism as a key moment in THIS period in time. The Beatles will get filed with classic music, and manned space exploration with astronomy and advancements in technology. These are all parts of our modern history, and actually the racial issue is not even yet history.
So, it's an excellent way to draw a line under the subject, by declaring the race freedom fighters as historical icons.

Get with the program!

Since the USA is the size of Europe, I'd have to say they have a lot of their own continent to see before looking at ours!

Anyway, how much do you know about North American history? Or African, or Asian? Do YOU happen to speak another language with any semblance of fluency, or do you expect everyone to speak English?

Pompous arrogance isn't only an American problem.

I suspect the results that kids get for these exams are more about HOW they go about researching their subject, how much effort they put in to it, and how well they present their findings, rather than whether they can tell the life story of Rosa Parks until the end of their days.

This is one sector out of an entire year's work (most of which will probably be spent discussing essentially British history anyway) so does it really matter that kids have a few weeks (probably 5 or 6 lessons) experiencing somebody else's view of the world?

Does a little knowledge of other people's perspective on life not make us more rounded as individuals??

You're missing the point of this thread Edna. It's classic far right exageration to try and whip up a bit of hysteria. A minor part of the curriculum for one class is being protrayed as if all London's schoolkids are taught nothing but black history the entire time. The fact that Bushy jumped in so quickly is a bit of a clue. Fortunately most people can recognise it for what it is.
