You're arguing the point from the wrong side. If you are a resident of Brighton, you don't necessarily need more housing for those residents,, because they are already resident - you need housing for either homeless, the transient or the in-comers.

Home Ownership is a huge issue in Brighton & Hove. According to the Census 2001 - 68.72% of households are owned through out England. The South East has a figure of 73.96% and Brighton & Hove lags behind with a figure of 61.65%. I dare say that the disparity within Brighton & Hove has windened in 6 years.

Of course, this is a moot point as the development would not be so 'affordable' if there was no Sainsbury's and Hotel etc.

Correct, and at leat something has now been built and it's not THAT bad. Ditto the Library and the other developments (more shops!) on the old Jubilee site.

Given the conservative and reactionary nature of most Brighton citizens when faced with development I'm amazed the whole city isn't a decaying slum. Let's hope the Black Rock development goes through.

Totally agree. Brighton and Hove is not a museum....it is a city and cities evolve. That is why it was so important that the King Alfred development got the go ahead. Not only will this be a great architectural addition to Hove it also provides the area with a first class sports facility at no cost to the tax payer. I hope the Gehry towers prove to be the start of a seachange in attitudes.

But honestly you cannot be saying that there wasn't an opportunity to really do something good and inventive with that space and they blew it. They sold out.

Yes, a hotel has some benefits. Yes ,a supermarket has some benefits. I'm not disputing that. What I am asking is, is that the best use of the land? For fat cats, yes. For the people of Brighton? Im not so certain.
But that was the problem! We argued and debated for 40 years about what should be built there. It's a glass half-full scenario - what's there is better than having a wasteland (we both agree on that) but it isn't perfect (we both agree on that as well). At the end of the day I guess I'm probably a bit more pragmatic than you. I suppose it's a bit like 'saving yourself' for the ideal partner - they may never come along.

The income generated from tourism does not get spent on residents.

Whoever pays for the housing it is overpriced and will most likely be bought up by buy to let owners or commuters.

If you think that the buildings they have erected on the site are a good thing for the area and residents you are very short sighted. There is only one reason they are there and that is to make people with vast amounts of money even more money.

If not a leisure centre then surely we have more options than a supermarket and a hotel?
Will you stop name-calling and being so f***ing obnoxious and abusive, you little wanker?

Income to the businesses in question doesn't get spent on residents - of course not. But larcenous business rates to the council DOES get spent on residents.

So if you don't want housing, or a supermarket or a hotel or a football stadium, what - apart from a white-elephanted leisure centre - do you want?

If they want tourist money why not build a good attraction? A natural History or science museum? a decent art gallery? evolving? Sainsbury's isn't evolving it is consuming in all senses of the word.

Yes, because the city centre doesn't need a supermarket, does it?

What's the point of building another good attraction if there's nowhere to accommodate more visitors?

I want a giant overhead tram system from Mile Oak to Falmer so the children can see the Albion in peace.

And world peace.

And someone to polyfilla everyone of Kerry Katona's holes.

And a Nintendo Wii.

Any of those please, TLO. I've been a very good boy this year.

Quite. The cheapest of the next phase is £140k which would mean taking out a 100% mortgage of six times the average wage. They would be even less affordable without the supporting developments. Sadly, they can't force the key workers/FTB to buy them (affordability issue) and the real beneficiaries will be those who are in a position to invest rather than genuine first time buyers and key workers.

Well.. you said I'm not aware of the bigger picture as well - that's pretty obnoxious. Your bigger picture is that you want something that will near gurantee a wasteland - a f***ing leisure centre. We've already got five that spring to mind without even thinking. The point about leisure centres is that they serve residential areas - not city centres.

And it appears you're already pretty upset. I mean, talk about closing the door after the horse has bolted. The plans were drawn up years ago.

So I have pefectly well 'got a grip' thank you.

Now then, name-calling? What shall I call you next? Um...
