i really hope that anyone sticking up for pikeys has a whole community living on their doorstep very soon. Then come back and tell us how great they are.

Yeah, yeah. Not sure who's 'sticking up for the pikeys' here, but some of us are wondering how/why prejudice is so acceptable. So why don't you have a stab at the question bhaexpress is ducking: what's the difference between what you've just posted and how people 'sticking up for' Blacks in Britain in the 60s or how people 'sticking up for' Jews in Germany in 1936 were challenged? Is it that travellers today really are all bad, whereas prejudice in the past was mistaken?

This thread isn't about why you are prejudiced. It's about why so many people are. So, no, your experience doesn't explain why so many people find it acceptable to generalise about this group.

And there's nothing condescending about asking you to justify your views.

So how about you try to answer my question about how prejudice against travellers in 2011 is different to prejudice against African-Caribbeans in the 60s and 70s (or Jews in lots of places throughout history) which has been justified in the same way. Like I asked, is it just that this time it's true? That they really are all bad?

Oh, and who is PC Arse? Anything to do with Edna?

I'd say they're not all bad but a vast majority do what they want, have no respect for locals or their surroundings & nobody can argue that wherever a site pops up so does a lot of crime.... They don't help themselves, they won't try & integrate with local residents & in a lot of cases intimidate them.
Right now about 5 mins away from where I live they have took over a playing field for about the 4 time this year (despite having a permanent site up the road) so local kids can't play there wich is shit because it's the half term.

There were some down my road, they stayed for 3 days then left, no mess, no violence, in fact i bumped into them and they weren't nasty at all. The families from the local estate however...:nono:

This can't be true. Several NSCers have stated that they're all rotters.

It isn't at all acceptable to those on the end of it, sadly I can speak from personal experience here (which seems to be the basis for those deeming it acceptable), possibly easier if you are dishing it out!

Then you were pretty fortunate to run into a decent few, there are some about & if all were like this I'd have no problem whatsoever with them plotting up near where I live.
I think we've discussed this before actually

Not all travellers are the same though. There are "gypsies", proper Romany travellers. There are those groups who clean up after themselves and you'd never know they'd been there. Then there are those that steal and mug and are anti-social in their behaviour.

Perhaps the bad group are the minority but it's their fault that all travellers get tarred with the same brush.

The difference is black people are exactly that. they made no choice, that is just how they are. The pikeys are sponging vermin who made a choice to be vermin. Genuine Romany cause nobody any harm and pretty much live off the land. People who think that these diddy coys are genuine travellers are devoid of any common sense. Are you really sure you want to compare mass genocide with removal of law breaking diddy coys?

I don't doubt what you say. But my point was about the double standards and lack of rights experienced by travellers.

Exactly, there is good and bad in every part of society, rich or poor, black or white, young or old.

In our road there was a problem with some students who were renting a house, creating havoc and making peoples lives a misery, especially those who lived next door to them. Does this make every student or young person bad, of course it doesn't, we were just unlucky. The people who lived in the house before them were brilliant, as were those who followed...those people were respectively a group of Poles and a single mother with a child, but that doesn't make good headlines does it.

Yes.

One of them quite probably saved my life, or at least helped me avoid serious injury, when I was a kid. I was spending the summer working on a fruit farm picking strawberries. Every day a van would pick us up in the village and drive us out there. One day I was sat at the back of the van, leaning on the door, when a lady noticed that the handle wasn't shut properly. She shouted out for me to move away from the door, a split second before we went over a bump and it sprung open, that lady was a Romany.
