33,431 29th April 1978 v Blackpool

Had to run round to the East after the gates were shut on the North Stand (probably at about 1.30pm...?)

Bit funny to think that despite The Amex being so amazing, I'd swap it for those days like a Peter Ward shot.

I was also one of the youngsters the was passed over the crowd in the North Stand v Fulham in 1958 and sat leaning on the wall, also I think it was for the Chelsea cup tie attended a reserve game with Notts County in a gate of about 25000. Attended most of the 30000plus games.Just to make me feel very old I remember Fulham ha d a young player named Jimmy Hill playing for them!

I have been part of 5 over 30,000 crowds at the Goldstone:

31,423 April 26th 1965 v Darlington (we won promotion and the old Div 4 title)
35,000 February 18th 1967 v Chelsea in the 4th Round of the FA cup
34,766 3rd May 1972 v Rochdale (1-1 draw to secure promotion from the old Div 3)
30,756 3rd May 1977 v Sheffield Wednesday (3-2 victory to secure promotion from the old Div 3)
33,431 29th April 1978 v Blackpool (2-1 win but missed out on promotion on goal difference)

No need to get a ticket in advance in those days - you just turned up at the turnstile and handed over the cash.

As far as I can recall we never achieved a 30,000 gate during our Div 1 stay.

Was at all of those. The Rochdale match what a boring game, we needed a point to secure promotion they needed a point to avoid relegation. Strange how it ended up 1-1

I was at the Rochdale game. Remember we both needed a point for some reason?. It was so rammed they put the kids at the front pitchside.
Before the days of 'elf an' safety! Think it was predictably 1-1. Correct me if I'm wrong was a long time ago.

We needed a point to go up, they needed a point to stay up - both teams celebrated at the end. We went ahead through Shirley Templeman very early on, Rochdale equalised and neither side made much effort after that.

My first experience of an Albion promotion ... and still the best

Norwich 83 for me! However I remember going to a game when I was about seven where I couldn't move for legs around me. Might have been the Wednesday game. Sadly my old man is no longer around to ask, and my old dear won't remember what she had for dinner last night. Did Wardy break the record in that match?

Was at that game to!

Was a great atmosphere, until the Saints Spurs result came through :tantrum:

Me too and whatever the published attendance was add a few thousand ... I seem to remember 36,000 being suggested. Saints/Spurs was always going to be a draw and think if we beat Blackpool by 7 it wouldn't have mattered - we thought we could even do that!

My fav ever match!!

Cup Finals in 83, Semi at Highbury in '83 and the play off in '92. Biggest that the Goldstine would be a 1-1 draw with Barrow in 1972, 34,000 (no doubt according to CPFC, many of them plastics).

Leeds - but not the dirty bit
Was at the Reading game Easter '70. I am sure there was a big crowd that day. They had a 'keeper called Death.
Anyone know what the figure was for that game ?

This is the one I remember, may not have been the biggest crowd but we could only just about squeeze into the top corner of the north stand instead of our usual position half way back, behind the goal.

34,766 3rd May 1972 v Rochdale (1-1 draw to secure promotion from the old Div 3) for me. We bunked off school early to get in. I knew some people who were locked out.

Same for me.We were in the last year of primary school and 3 of us went over by train. It was a scorching hot evening if I remember correctly. I wouldn`t dream of having let my 11 year old son go to footie with two mates on there own at the age of 11.

Amazed I was never in a 30k crowd at the Goldstone, but it seems Liverpool in the rain was a touch under (though never trusted the reporting of those numbers).

One thing to remember about the short, glorious period in the old First Division, hooliganism was near it's peak (or just past it but we only know that looking back), so crowds must have been seriously affected. Typical Albion - we get to the top at the time people are falling out of love with football - we plunge to the basement at a time when Sky are pouring money into the game. We back on the up at a time when perhaps interest has peaked! Thank goodness for Tony and our sound approach to wages and development - the next decade could be the best in our history.
