Pay on the gate so that's why there were loads outside.

I know there were more fans at the Cup Final
I have been part of 5 over 30,000 crowds at the Goldstone:
31,423 April 26th 1965 v Darlington (we won promotion and the old Div 4 title)
35,000 February 18th 1967 v Chelsea in the 4th Round of the FA cup
34,766 3rd May 1972 v Rochdale (1-1 draw to secure promotion from the old Div 3)
30,756 3rd May 1977 v Sheffield Wednesday (3-2 victory to secure promotion from the old Div 3)
33,431 29th April 1978 v Blackpool (2-1 win but missed out on promotion on goal difference)
No need to get a ticket in advance in those days - you just turned up at the turnstile and handed over the cash.
As far as I can recall we never achieved a 30,000 gate during our Div 1 stay.
I was at the Rochdale game. Remember we both needed a point for some reason?. It was so rammed they put the kids at the front pitchside.
Before the days of 'elf an' safety! Think it was predictably 1-1. Correct me if I'm wrong was a long time ago.
Albion v Derby '76 33,601. Wardy scored in the first minute - what a night.
Was at that game to!

Was a great atmosphere, until the Saints Spurs result came through
I was there too! And it was my largest attendance I think. 32 or 33k.

I think for me it was v Liverpool, 3-3 in the rain.
Same here. Stood in terracing at the front of the South stand. Absolutely rammed.
34,766 3rd May 1972 v Rochdale (1-1 draw to secure promotion from the old Div 3) for me. We bunked off school early to get in. I knew some people who were locked out.
This is the one I remember, may not have been the biggest crowd but we could only just about squeeze into the top corner of the north stand instead of our usual position half way back, behind the goal.
