Thirded, never a penalty

2 joke ones today. One CB catching forward with his elbow as he jumped and Sweden penalty when there forward tripped over keeper. terrible decisions in such big games. VAR officials should only give penalty if 100% sure. Sure 90% of neutral supporters would not have given them.

Just because you didn't think it was a penalty doesn't mean the VAR officials were less than 100% sure. Not even 90% of fans disagreeing with it means they were less than 100% sure. They are unrelated, so the whole 'only give decisions they're 100% sure on" won't eliminate decisions with which you (or the majority of fans) disagree.

Maybe my wording was wrong. Fact is so many penalties for very little spoil games. In both games I mentioned penalty was given for things that happens several times in every game I watch. The first was only given because player went down and other one player tripped over keeper who had spread himself out to get ball. You maybe pro VAR but I think it spoils games

I thought the Stirling one was a penalty but ref didnt give it and VAR didnt get involved. Much better from a football point of view with ref making the decision

Really highlights how woefully VAR has been applied in the PL. From the expectations VAR has established amongst English fans in the PL, I thought Sterling’s would be reviewed and given a penalty. The fact it wasn’t even looked at shows that it’s been chronically misapplied in the PL.

Are they using a different VAR in the Euros than in the Prem ? The Sterling one tonight was a nailed on penalty had it been in the Prem - he stood on his foot when making the tackle bringing Sterling down. The ref's decision to play on would have been overturned and the penalty given .

A penalty being awarded would have been the correct decision because sterling was fouled in the box. - I cannot see or agree that the Euro method ,in this case, is better.

Much like Cyprus and Greece giving each other 12 points at Eurovision, I hope that if we (England) don't win the Euros, either Wales or Scotland do.

Us British must stick together.

Agree. Everyone banging on about VAR being better but the fact is it just isn't being used at all. Definitely a pen on Sterling but that prat walton said there wasn't enough contact but there were plenty of fouls outside the box with similar contact that were given.

I think the use of VAR at thes championships has shown that it is over used in the PL and that's because the TV Companies want to play as big a part in deciding the outcome of matches than they ought to.

If we restrict it to the " clear and obvious error " prototype then it works well.

Instead, TV Broadcasters are drawing pencil lines down TV screens to make decisions and too much is scrutinised. If you use it more sparingly it has been proven in the last World Cup and this Tournament that it works well.

Also Refs in this tournament have been great letting play carry on and not falling for players theatricals. Although that blonde Dutch guy Frank something or other keeps rolling all over the place and getting free kicks

You had the opposite situation in the Denmark-Finland game where there was the slightest contact and the Ref gives it with no VAR involvement.

Appreciate that but still prefer ref to make decision otherwise so often just down to opinion of VAR person. VAR should be there in case ref missed something obvious like a deliberate elbow/punch or if inside area

My feelings on VAR are too contradictory and complex to be simply pro or anti it (or maybe I'm just indecisive). I think one of the issues with it is fan expectation, partly which seemed to appear in your post. If you are expecting VAR officials to only make calls when they are 100% sure, you need to accept that the with so many subjective decisions, there are many situations where the referees can be entirely certain in their decision, even if they don't come to the same conclusion as you.

I think an unspoken belief was that VAR would lead to all officaiting decision matching what we fans and the pundits (or the majority of) think they should be. It was never going to happen, and as we disagree with refs (and have done for decades), we will continue to disagree with them when they make their calls via VAR. This isn't a flaw of VAR, it is the nature of refs being humans and many of the laws being subjective calls.

Not really, could go either way. Wasn't a clear and obvious error.

For once, Grealish had every reason to be rolling around in agony after Jorginho's studs went into him. Jorginho was very, very luck not to get a straight red.

Better because game in general much better to watch with ref giving decisions. Refs clearly aware that players would be looking for pens and freekicks and were under instructions and to play on unless 100% sure. In general most plays were up and running about as soon as realised foul not given. They will get some wrong but better to watch. Would go as far as saying if refs were like this in PL Grealish would get far fewer free kicks

Whilst I agree, Grealish general style of 'play' means Refs will just assume he's going for an Oscar and there was little to no contact. If that's the way you play you have to take the rough with the smooth. Yes it was a foul and a yellow, but there was no clear and obvious error.
