I’m not being harsh. I’m judging him completely objectively based on what I’ve actually seen him do on the pitch. I’d suggest that people refusing to do that, and instead assuming some kind of attitude problem, are in many ways being more harsh.

and as for ‘we wouldn’t have signed him, if he couldn’t defend at all’ - even the best scouts and data sets, get some wrong.
It’s not true that you’re being objective based on your observations. By definition, these are subjective impressions. There’s very little in football, or indeed in life, that’s truly objective.

The way I read it , Seville are ready for him to go, Brighton are ok for him to go to Porto, Barco is ok to go to Porto. Brighton want a loan till the end of season. Porto want 18 months and option to buy at the price quoted

Is any report saying this is actually happening?

His fiancee looks to have packed ready to move!
"The fiancée of the full-back #SevillaFC, Valentín Barco, posts on social networks that the move is already prepared. The information advanced a few days ago that Barco would leave this week is confirmed. First they will go to #Brighton to close some papers, and from there to Portuguese lands to sign with the #FCPorto"

From what I’ve seen from Barco, he has a long way to go to be a good EPL Fullback or Winger. However, as a left wingback, I think he’d be brilliant. I believe the same is true of Lamptey, they seem like similar players to me but operate on different sides.

Some teams play wingbacks. Palace is a good example. Barco and Lamptey would be a huge upgrade on what they have at the moment.

He really was. As soon as the ball goes in the air, he is especially poor. He's scared of an arial challenge - literally shirks from it. He can't defend at all.

Obviously, he's a young player, and has loads of scope to improve, on all or any aspects of his game. But, from an admittedly small sample size, I've been completely unimpressed - despite the fanfare and reputation he arrived with.

I daresay we've let equally talented, less exotic players, leave over the last few seasons, without any fan anguish.
The joy of football. One man’s Barco is another man’s Weiffer.

For some balance, in 300 minutes, of which 3 were starts at the end of the year in an imbalanced, injury riddled side, he was making more tackles than JPVH, as many interceptions as Veltman and Baleba, whilst rarely being dribbled past, whilst having relatively promising attacking stats - certainly better attacking stats than Veltman and Lamptey, and some comparable to Estupinan.

Not that stats say everything, but I do think there’s the basis of a really good player there.

Completely agree on both points.

Said as much a few times above
He’s like Lampty, a ball-progressing player that needs to be playing a wingback/midfield position.
[Barco] he does have some weaknesses to his game - and unsurprisingly for a lateral midfielder/wingback being played as LB

Do you not think FH is beginning to play like that?

Lamptey’s game has improved significantly in recent weeks, I thought largely because he’s been playing higher up the pitch with the back 4 looking more like a back 3.

Quite, we should be bearing with him for his ball delivery, we genuinely are more at risk of conceding after our set pieces rather than scoring from them. They are generally shit and have been for ages. For a club that is so good at pretty well everything it is so frustrating. I am starting to worry about getting caught on the counter rather than get excited about the set pieces these days :lolol:
I have, perversely, sometimes thought it better that we kick corners straight out, giving us a better chance of a goal on the counter of a goal-kick, than the risk of a break from a crap corner that lands on the lap of the first defender.

Let’s see against Arsenal but I think you are onto something.

We could see something like this….

———————Verbruggen———————-
—-Veltman——Van Hecke——Dunk————
Lamptey—-Baleba——-Ayari——-Estupiñán
——-Georginio—-Pedro—-Mitoma————

I think this is what I saw too, I really liked it. And as others have said probably more of a LW/LWB than a fullback. He looked tougher than most and if he just put on some weight, that would do him good.

Will be interesting to see how it ends, I hope we keep him somehow. If not, all the best to him at Porto. It might work out well ... or his fiancee might get used to pack, he could easily end up like a journey man. Hard to tell in this case.

I think corners are much better played short. I’d play 80% short and only lump the odd one into the box to keep the opposition guessing.

Corners should be seen as an opportunity to disorient the defence rather than try to drop one onto Dunk’s head.

Tbf, we don't have great headers of the ball. Probably why we barely score from corners and don't quite deal with the ball when head height. Short corners are probably for the best.

There's also the opportunity to whip a cross in from the second ball of a short corner, as the defensive unit is breaking up.

I thought we would score from a corner against Villa when they had something to aim at, JPvH's white tape on his forehead, Pedros full circle etc. No luck there though.
Van Hecke really SHOULD have scored from one.

I know the following stat is of very little relevance at all and I’m sure this post will be criticised but I’m totally at a loss with the whole Barco situation this year, starting with him going out on loan - failing to get minutes and possibly being moved on with a buyout option of fifty quid. Also some of the opinions of his ability in here have been eye opening.

Pompey Stevo that I work with is in a fantasy football league and has had great insight into the Brighton ‘unheard of’s’ that are very cheap, over the last few years he’s got in early with some of our best players because it’s all he hears about at work!

He thought Barco was his secret weapon this year… was gobsmacked when the guy that beats him into second in his league every year also had Barco 😆

I’ve just looked it up and Barco was actually the fifth most picked left back in the whole competition this year selected by 22% of players.

What is going on with the lad?

Brighton? score from set piece? never! Always makes me smile inwardly if we win a corner, fans cheering as if we are about to score a goal. as rare as hen's teeth if we do.
