Upper Beeding cement works site an alternative to Falmer?

Just got an email saying that a cabinet member in Horsham District Council said that the Upper Beeding Cement Works could be a venue for Brighton and Hove Albion's new ground if the proposals for Falmer fall through.

What does everyone think to this?
Reasons why this would not work?

Too far from the sun
Just off the top of my head...

(1) too far from Brighton
(2) too far from public transport and only one single-carriageway road in/out
(3) cost a fortune to decontaminate the site before anything can be built
(4) should really be used to build the world's largest indoor 'real snow' ski centre instead but will probably end up as housing or a land-fill site

I was thinking the fact that it isnt in Brighton and that the club couldnt afford the planning for another stadium would mean this is bollocks.

How much is it we have spent now on Falmer planning?

Falmer
It has to be 12 or 8 or whatever amount of miles it is from Brighton. :jester:

Been there
Looked at it (at least twice - barry lloyd -when MD- was for it, bellotti and Archer weren't, and I think Martin Perry looked at it pre referendum)
Rejected it

I don't think the land is available for sale anyway

no transport or other required infrastructure links (which would ALL have to be paid for by BHA - tens of millions)
Would have to buy the land (assuming the owner wanted to selland then prepare the site for development (again would cost tens of millions)
Outside the Brighton & Hove conurbation so breaks the conditions of relocating the club set down by the FL in 1999-so could run the risk of being thrown out of the FL

Or it has to be sufficiently close that I can leave the Battle of Trafalgar at 2:30 and still be in the ground in time for a 3 o'clock kick-off, using only walking and/or public transport

1 - crap , people will travel miles and do so more and more these days
2 - the road is easily widened and the bed of the railway is still in place, also theres a bus service in place which could easily be 'upped' at peak times
3- decontaminate ???? explain . . .theres a lot of chalk dust but not much else, a lot of the old kit could be recycled/sold as scrap or even sold to the far east (happening a lot with old machinery), but I do agree its a bit project to manage which ever way you look at it.

zef - by saying too far from Brighton I was referring to the conditions that the FA set down for our relocation, ie within 8 miles of the Pavilion. As far as the decontamination is concerned (this is a vague recollection, no more) one of the reasons the site has been empty for so long is that oil and chemicals stored by Blue Circle have leaked at the site and would have to be cleared up by whoever developed it. After the quarrying stopped they used the site for storing all sorts of old stuff.

As I say, it's a recollection of something I read in the local rag a few years ago and I may be wrong.

Land fill or waste incinerator for that site I think.

To make the place safe for any sort of use other than industrial would be a nighmare. Steep sided chalk cliffs, road access, rail access, etc would cost mega money and years to sort out.

Never realised how big that place was though until I started to drive past everyday to work.

More likely Plan B would be a site near Burgess Hill if Falmer goes tits up (which I'm sure it won't).

and its near the downs, next to a river valley, swampy and co would have a field day, despite the ugliest junction and viaduct about a mile down the road, that completely ruined the valley in the first place.

granted it would be hidden though.

Yep, a quick stroll down the riverbank to the match would suit me nicely. I don't think the road could be widened sufficiently though; the land in between the road and river is easily flooded in places. Wasn't it considered and ruled out during the original surveys?

Note that the plans were shelved after concerns about traffic. Not much hope for a 22,000 capacity stadium then!

bloody hell I did'nt realise it got THAT far along! I knew it was mentioned years ago. Traffic? blimey that a poor excuse!
