Serious world power in that we retained a strong and important voice, we are becoming easier to ignore and Brexit is playing an important part in that. What made 'tiger' economies work was that they were built up from a very low base, were totally dominated by the state, focused entirely on exports and very homogenous - absolutely nothing like the current UK economy. Japan has twice our population and about twice our GDP - funny that. It also has all sorts of problems relating to aging and debt. Japan was rapidly re-industralised by the US after WW2 and given preferential trade deals which allowed them to create world-beating corporations.

Such a serious world power with a strong and important voice that our PM had to go cap in hand to see Merkel pre referendum and ask if it was possible to have more control of our own borders ... answer Nein

I consider myself on the left and I voted to leave (although I had no problems with freedom of movement), There are many Labour left-wingers who voted to leave and it's the official policy of the Socialist Party, The Socialist Party of GB, the SWP and the Communists

Another Turkey voting for Christmas...

Talk about arrogance - even by your standards. You presumably are not an idiot, are you? The arrogance of this post is matched only by its simplicity - all old people are idiots, whereas in my experience, older folk just tend to be that shade wiser. You would seem to have a lot to learn.

Yeah but he's right...

Democracy where only 17 million out of a population of 63.6 million (those eligible to vote as of December 2015 was 45,766,000) voted to leave.

Yes democracy in action
Where the people who are entitled to vote and use that entitlement can enforce change.

46,501,241 Electorate entitled referendum voters
17,410,742 Vote Leave-Winners
16,141,241 Vote Remain- Losers
12,949,258 Not bothered, just go with the flow and let others decide for them whatever the outcome.

Your problem with democracy appears to stem from the fact you lost a democratic vote, ill leave you to work out how stupid that mindset is

Dreadful isnt it we didnt allow the whole population including babies to vote.........what a travesty of democracy
If your implication is that anyone regrets babies not being able to vote - well, that's just silly.

Yeah but he's right...

Don't be so silly. To claim that ALL older folk are idiots is just plain daft. Older folk have by definition much experience of life and are far more able to give an informed opinion that someone aged 18, for example. Of course that does not always mean that older folk are necessarily always right, simply because they are experienced - other issues can come to play such as being set in one's ways - but it is quite likely that someone who has had a variety of jobs, brought up children and grandchildren, experienced different levels of responsibility at work, perhaps chaired a society, etc etc will inevitably offer far more than a young person, with the best will in the world. And you think that all old folk are idiots is true. What does this say about you?

Not always. You think they’re wiser because you’re probably viewing them from a similar stand point. I personally find they can often be bogged down with out-dated and tired thinking. Smarter ideas, fresh thinking and novel solutions often come from younger people in my opinion and not from people who view things from a reference point which has long passed.....and I include myself in this. I see this quite clearly in my work place. Experience isn’t always helpful.

I would never argue that the EU handled Cameron well! Their intransigence will cost us both (us far more tho unfort.)

Yes, you are right, and I think I did allude to that by saying that older folk are not necessarily right, simply because they have more experience. But I was replying to someone who wrote that all older people are idiots, which is as stupid as saying that all younger people offer nothing in the work place. Yes, experience is not always helpful, unless that experience is put to good use with an open mind.

I am not worried about Brexit 'D Day' deadlines. I seriously don't expect the UK will be exiting from anything. By 2019 the Euro will be confetti and the EU in tatters.

Is the US media anti-Brexit, then? (just asking - I've no idea).

I had a nice long response typed out yesterday, but it didn't go through, so I'm giving the short version.

Media here is entirely partisan, and news outlets have become popular points of opposition for supporters of the major parties. The tone networks took was entirely different, but the right leaning outlets viewed it favorably and the left leaning ones didn't. But the reason is in the US, it was very much seen as an alt-right movement, so alt-right folks hailed it as a nativist victory. For people who have any idea what Brexit is, if you tell them you support Brexit, they assume you're a Trumper ready to carry torches at Charlottesville.

However, I get most of my news from Al Jazeera and followed Brexit coverage on BBC. The tone of those outlets was very much the same, that Brexit was a right-wing movement.
