It depends on what you're into....some of the things I miss are:

I used to live 5 floors up from a pick a bagel (75th and 2nd), and could smell them boiling away early morning, warm cream cheese and lox bagels are like nothing else...queue up first thing and make sure you don't dwardle on your order!

My favourite restaurant was Lexington Grill, (72nd and Lex) not OTT, mediumly expensive (to keep out the rif-raf, and attentive service, and if you're a carnivore like me, then right up your street. Another was Sunday Brunch at Atlantic Grill - how to be seen!!

Go visit Zabars on the Upper west side, its an emporium of world food in a block, truly amazing even if you don't buy anything...

Graces Market and its cafe (if its still there) was at the bottom of my second apartment building, again a foodie emporium in a shoebox.

The Met Museum and the Egyptians and the glass window onto the park are magnificent. Central Park zoo is incredible as a zoo in the middle of a park but probably not on the top ten but if you find yourself there with some spare change then pop in...

Union Square can be a day in itself, especially if there is a market on, Barnes and Noble can take hours for a bookworm like me, and more importantly the Strand Bookstore - all 18 miles aparently! noodles at republic and then walk back to your hotel or home, its the walking and looking which is the best part of NY, keep your head up and your eyes open and you don't have to pay a dime for it!

Go to Steinway Hall and look at the pianos - might not sound like fun, but to an old pianist for me it is...

and sit on a bench in Central Park and eat donuts and watch the world go past....it truly is amazing...

I miss New York I do...

I live on 77th and York. Nice location for Central Park and the Museums. I know what you mean about the bagel places. Can’t beat sitting with a coffee and bagel reading the Sunday edition of the New York Times and watching the world go round. I’m also right next door to a Dunkin Donuts – bliss!

Way out West
Went there in August - fantastic (but very hot). The subway system is fantastic - faster trains than the London Underground, and more frequent. Get one of the 7 day passes - they were about $25 if I recall for a whole week's travel anywhere on the system (plus buses).

Already mentioned, but would recommend the High Line walk (google it), and Chelsea Market. Walk over Brooklyn Bridge and explore Brooklyn Heights. Get the boat to Ellis Island (don't bother getting off at Liberty Island - you get all the views you could need from the boat). If you're into modern art, the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art is absolutely fabulous. If the weather's nice you might like to take the Long Island Railroad up to the Hamptons or to Shelter Island....approx two hours by train, but you get to see a completely different side of NY.

Agree about the Rock. Much better than the Empire State Building. Also visit the intrepid museum. Really good. Concorde is there too. If you have an interest in planes you will will enjoy this.

We went to the bronx zoo. Had a great day there. So much to see.
