Good point re: tipping. We were totally oblivious to the fact you were meant to 'tip' for someone to take the top off a bottle of Corona and nearly got thrown out of a bar after our 4th for not doing so

f***ing yanks. How much should one tip for that?

$1 per drink is the standard.... if you stay in the bar long enough - say 4 - 5 drinks then you normally get a drink on the house so it evens out in the end.

And PDT (Please Dont Tell) in the east village - wont spoil the suprise but you need to reserve a table in advance and then perform an act from the Superman films to get in...

"230 5th" is a cool bar with a massive open air deck overlooking manhattan with great views of the Empire State Building. Overpriced drinks but normally full of totty and great views. Plus they have outdoor heaters and "Snuggies" for when it gets a bit chilly

Am going there on Tuesday morning for ten days.

Got NBA and NHL tickets and hope to see a few of the main attractions, but anyone been and got any tips of good places to go shopping, eating etc?

Make sure you go for breakfast in all the backstreet places, when we were there we were staying in the Hilton by Ground Zero, and followed a group of builders from the site into this cracking cafe which we returned to the next day. Far better IMO than going to the large well known chains.
As for shopping, we went out to Woodbury Common outlets one day, which I wouldnt reccommend as it was pretty much an American version of Gunwharfe quays, where the stuff is cheaper, but ridiculously overpriced originally. You'll pass more than enough shops just by walking round, especially if you're there for 10 days.
Finally i'd do the guided tour of ground zero, given the amount of time you're out there its well worth doing, starts from the fire station and was very reasonably priced. All done by people who were in the building or firefighters who helped rescue people.

Oh, and i'm sure someone else has suggested this, but i'd advise you to go up the Rockefeller instead of the Empire state if your debating which, far less queueing time.

Enjoy, im sure you will

I did both, and there was little in the way of a queue for either - went up the Empire State Building first thing in the morning.

Katz deli on Houston, where Harry met Sally, mega size sandwiches. Staton Island ferry, great views of Statue of Liberty and Manhatten and it's free. Ground zero, and nearby St. Pauls Church to pay respects to innocent people murdered. Dakota Building, where John Lennon was shot, then walk across the road to Strawberry Fields memorial and Central Park. Greenwich Village, some great bars and live music of all sorts. Ride the subway it's easy, cheap and safe and don't be afraid to walk, it's surprising what you see.

New York City truly is a fantastic city and to be honest, I'll probably end up living there one day as I have family and many friends there.

Some great suggestions on here but all I'll say is don't spend too much time doing all the boring tourist things. Although a visit to Ellis Island and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge as suggested are two musts.

Please visit Foleys on 33rd st directly opposite the ESB. My mate Shaun will give you a 10% discount if you mention you're an Albion fan and all Palace stuff is banned. But it's about all sports his bar and the memorabilia he has acquired is superb. Just donated my white shirt that we wore at Palace when I was there last week.

And get down to Greenwich Village and have a leisurely walk around. And find your way to Bleecker Street and some live music. Kennys Castaways is the bar for this.

try the cuban sandwich at cafe habana down on prince st, about a block south from bowery. best cuban food i've found in the city after a friend took me a few months back.

also would thoroughly recommend a trip over to brooklyn for breakfast as five leaves. it's at bedford & lorimer, right on the top of mccarren park. their eggs with sage are f***ing delicious :)

Good to hear you've been there Somerset.

Two more good restaurants. Rare at 37th and Lexington and the City Grill at 72nd and Columbus. Both very good.

oh, and if you want a nice dinner, try the red cat out on 10th ave... found it last week when i was in town for the night and is great. somewhere up around 20th/25th if i remember rightly.

also the smith on 3rd ave at 11th.. cracking food and very reasonably priced. always worth stopping in if you're in the neighbourhood.
