Sometimes airlines do good flight+hotel deals. Look at BA, Continental for this.

For flights, Continental are usually best on price, £360 return seems to be the lowest price for economy these days. Newark is a better airport than JFK to get through / out of too, ime.

BA have a sale on until Monday I think, might be some bargains in there?

If you do go seperate, can't go wrong with booking.com for hotels, loads of choice. Expect to pay over the odds for a hotel in Manhattan, for not a brilliant standard. I quite like the New Yorker, decent-ish price, decent location and "OK" sized rooms.

By the way, I'd fly Continental over BA any day, having been on both in Economy [and Economy+] on BA

If you want to do some shopping go to Woodbury Common. Retail outlet shopping centre about 40 min bus ride from city centre. You buy tickets from the guys in yellow or red around Time Square.
Got all the designer shops and lots more and they sell full ranges, not the end of line stock that hasn't shifted. Unbelievably cheap. Spent a full day there, bought so much stuff I had to buy two new suitcases to bring it all home!!

As well as the suggestions so far you definitely want to visit Brighton Beach in Brooklyn and go to Primorskis or Tatianas - best Russian restaurants and nightclubs in town. Visit Brooklyn brewery in Williamsburg. For something a bit different , if you have the time, take the Metro North line up to Poughkeepsi – great views of the Hudson Valley and a chance to stop off at some interesting little towns in upstate New York. If you do Brooklyn Bridge stop off at JR Electronics – just down the road towards City Hall and has a good selection of electronics etc. Plenty of good bars in town with some good ales - try any of the brews by Brooklyn Brewery, Fire Island brewery, Sixpoint Craft ales or Heartland Brewery. Tavern on the Green is now shut.

I am going by Virgin. Hope its ok. I RUDDY hate flying.

Virgin are OK, service is generally decent, only problems I have had in the past is other passangers, Virgin seems to attract a certain type ;-)

Good advice Mendoza ! Also don't ask for a fag if your a smoker...

On being arrested by Pompano police in Florida in the early 70s, and not being familier with the American version of the term..when asked if I wanted anything, you can only imagine the stunned silence that fell over the police station when I asked for a fag.

check out the bar near theventrance in the meat packing district called hogs and heifers - it's a biker bar where any suits that go in there usually lose their ties and women lose their bra's ! The bar staff are normally pretty fit and are scantily clad whist serving you ;)

I’d second that. Some nights the bar maids start dancing in stilettos on the top of the bar and shouting at the punters with a megaphone. Crazy place.

Worthing
Macsorleys in the village is a real irish pub with sawdust on the floor and 2 beers on tap. Dark or light and thats your lot. They started allowing women in for the first time in the late seventies but apart from that well worth a visit. (beer is lurvely)
I think it might be the oldest bar in New York or summit. "Be Good or Be Gone".

McSorley's Old Ale House
