High up on the South Downs.
So this thread has got to the fifth page without London Irish telling us that Oatway is the club's cornerstone.
Perhaps LI has realised, as most of us did at Port Vale 2002, that Charlie's time is up.
We shouldn't abuse Albion players during a game. They deserve better than that. I've never slagged off Charlie or any other Albion player I reserve my spleen for the frequently inept officials.

Race, I'd like to know whether you honestly believe Charlie is up to Championship level.

In my opinion, fans do make a noticeable difference.

I use as my example the Inter-Rangers game of this week gone, where Inter really struggled without the support of the crowd.

It depends who is actually typing on the keyboard when Race is logged into Nsc. It isn't always the female of the species. ;)

Charlie last season was a revelation at this level, as most of us consider him to be too slow and he needs to improve his accuracy and passing, but he has struggled to compete this season.

Aren't we forgetting that Charlie doesn't pick himself. That job is reserved for the manager.

He isn't likely to go up to McGhee and say 'sorry boss I don't think I'm up to this level any more.'

If we accept that he's doing the best he can, and I've seen him have both good and awful games, then what on earth is the point of booing him?

Are we going to boo all of the players both individually and collectively when we lose, irrespective of the fact we've done bloody well to stay in this division?

Fans have the right to moan if they want to, obviously. But I thought the notion of being a supporter was that you supported.

Get behind the team, support McGhee, pray for Falmer, and abuse the opposition. That's what I'm going to do.

Tadley. I take it you are an England supporter. How would you feel if Sven, for some reason, decided to pick David James in goal every game, because that's how I feel with Charlie in our side now.

I agree that it's wrong to boo our own players, but are you telling me you don't curse when our players kick the ball straight out of play, miss a tackle or get caught out of position?

Anyone thats says they have never jeered a Brighton player is lying.

I don't lie. I have not clapped at the end of a match and groaned when a pass has gone wrong but never booed a Brighton player or jeered.

That's it - it's one thing to react at a poor pass, mistake or own goal etc, but it's another to stand up and launch a premeditated attack on a player. We've all done the former, but I'm always dissapointed when I see someone do the latter.

Oatway should never, ever be seen in an ALBION shirt again and he can write (or get someone to write for him) his totally UNFUNNY programme notes in the Lewes programme at a level he is fit for.

OATWAY OUT

But he is English Ernest !!

Personally, I think players have got to accept that being abused by your own fans is part of the game. I would say that those who spit vitriol from the sidelines tend to be sorry examples of mankind anyway. This is not the same thing as sighing or shouting "For F** Sake", but abusing your own player for having a crap game is ridiculous. Anyhow, I'm fairly sure that if Oatway is playing badly, he's the first bloke on the pitch to KNOW it, and he does NOT pick the team.

And Race, I'm afraid your attitude to the "we pay your wages" grumble comes across to me as somewhat arrogant. You're right of course - we don't pay the players wages directly, even if £100+ is a LOT of money for an afternoon at a football match for the family. But you've got to realise that the big money (that DOES pay player wages) will disappear if bums are not on seats. No sponsor will pay big money if stadiums are half empty.

Its got nothing to do with who pays what and how much. Moan by all means if it makes you feel better but just because you chose to spend your money on a ticket does not entitle you to abuse players on the pitch during the game.

Moaning during and after a game is totally different to verbal abuse in my opinion.
Thats the nail on the head .. we can all moan but Verbal abuse is the no no .. you might moan about something at work but i dont think verbal abuse is done and got away with !

Best moan of the day on Sat when was someone at the back of H Block shouted at McGhee in the dugout. "Get that twat (Kerry) off. Look he's just next to you! Grab him!!!"

:D

You can't help but shout something in the heat of the moment when your team is losing, players are making stupid mistakes and everyone's getting frustrated. You don't have time to think whether or not "it's a good idea."
