Any fan who abuses their own players DURING the game is a plank, end of. As a fan you should do your best to help the team win. If my students abused me during class it would not make me work harder or try to teach better, I would just try to do the bare minimum for them and seek another job.

It's one thing to sigh and groan, another to call the players, we should be saving that for the opposition.

Respect.

Sometimes you can't help muttering, or even yelling "for f***'s sake" during a game, but that's more out of frustration. To continually abuse your own player is just STOOPID.

If the team have played like c*nts there's nothing wrong with letting them know at the final whistle, but for the 90 minutes you should be getting behind them 100%.

Of course, opposing players and match officials are fair game for abuse at any time.

The point being though that fans abusing him or any players on the pitch isnt going to make them play any better, some ppl seem to think it gives them a kick up the arse, it just doesnt!

People respond in different ways.

Is fans chanting positive stuff really going to make them play any better?

Thats a bit of a no brainer really.

The crowd getting behind the players obviously gives the players a boost, they want to hear the crowd getting behind them every game and being positive.

Very much of the " when you're fcuked your well and truly fcuked" attitude on this.

Did all the cheering etc ever help Henman win Wimbledon?

The Millenium stadium 30th May 2004. 9 mins to go and everyone thinking it was going to be extra time and penalties.
Michel, Kerry and someone else I cannot remember ran round to our fans behind the goal and the sound level of chants rose dramatically. We attacked and got awarded a penalty etc etc
The players have said in various interviews that when the fans get behind them it lifts them.
Remember Watford away last season when Webber scored we immediately started singing Sussex by the Sea to the bewilderment of the Hornet fans.
We got the point we needed that day.

no but everyone wants him to win so they get behind him.don't ever remember anyone shouting out that he's shit or that he ain't good enough between service games.if they did then do you think it would improve his chances or make him think that everyones against him thus destroying his confidence

Can i just say I have been an Albion fan since 1970, and like a lot of you on here i have obviously seen the good and bad, i have many times uttered abuse to players, but quietly to myself or people i am at the match with, i see no reason to give a player abuse so that he hears what you say while playing, this can only destroy his confidence no matter how professional that player is.

We all want Brighton to do well, and i for one think that Mark Mcghee is the right manager to take us forward, there may well be a couple of players in our present squad that are not really up to the Championship, but for now that's who we have, and for them to perform they need all the support we as fans can give them.

I do not think that ANY player goes out there and doesn't try.

I will give my support to every player that pulls on that Blue and White shirt, even when we have our off days, i have seen enough already this season to convince me that we will not go down and will finish at least a couple of places higher than last season.

That maybe. Some fans seem to think that shouting abuse is going to make some sort of difference, when all it does is prove negative and I bet whoever it was who doing the abusing wouldnt actually have the balls to go up to him after the game and say it to his face!

But thats part of football

And dont you dare say to me that you have the right to say what you want to a player cos you pay their wages.............what utter bollocks.

I'm sorry but that is bollox.

If we're paying 20 or 30 quid for a ticket plus all the extras like travel etc I think if someone wants to have a moan if a player's not performing it's fair enough.

I'm sure most of them are earning a lot more than the majority of the fans do but I'm sure you see it differently to us as you're on the "inside".

Its got nothing to do with who pays what and how much. Moan by all means if it makes you feel better but just because you chose to spend your money on a ticket does not entitle you to abuse players on the pitch during the game.

Moaning during and after a game is totally different to verbal abuse in my opinion.

Is it any different to moaning at the ref?

Whats moaning at a ref got to do with Charlie being abused by his own fans?

I have not read the whole thread but from what i have it is booing your own players isnt it?

My point is no one cares when its towards the ref but its a taboo if its towards your own players.

I agree with both sides - when a player has a bad game you should be able to inform him - but there is a certain line and it seems someone crossed it yesterday

Technically no, but as said before, opposing players and match officials are fair game for abuse - it's part of the game. There's just no sense in ripping your own players apart while they're still trying to work for the team.

I've let rip at the players before, calling them useless c*nts, a disgrace to the shirt etc, but never during a match.
