Probably been death by statistics on NSC since Friday night, but here we go with this week's bounce.

http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-championship/2015-2016/table/2015-12-12 P20 +11 42 Top
http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-championship/2016-2017/table P20 +19 42 Second

Credit Newcastle with setting a cracking pace and to Reading for bouncing back from a 5-0 mauling.

When you compare the tables the differences year on year are fairly subtle in terms of points. Rotherham are just a little bit worse than Bolton last year. Leeds in fifth are only three points behind where Burnley were at the same stage last season, but it doesn't feel anywhere near as open. The Goal difference column really demonstrates this. The top four were all in double figures positive GD at this point. This year it is the top 2 and only inconsistent Fulham who are making any impact.

Our fabulous defence is keeping us ahead, the main concern has to be the distribution of goals. Last season we had 6 wide men all chip in with at least 2 goals over the course of the season. So far, take out Knockaert and only Murphy has scored. Dale Stephens is another lagging behind last season's effort, although Kayal's absence and heavier defensive duties may partially explain this.

One game before the half way stage and we are starting to open a gap against ourselves last season.

Here is the CheeseRolls statement on progress to date.

We are on target for promotion and are giving ourselves every opportunity to achieve it. We are not significantly better than a whole host of rivals in the top half of the division, but our resilience, consistency and squad strength is making it very difficult, for rivals to stay in touch (Newcastle excepted).

There is no reason at all to concede the title to Newcastle, they are just as likely as us to suffer a dip in form and whilst we were clearly beaten in August at St James' Park. There is nothing to suggest that we can not reverse this at the Amex. A one point difference at this stage is not significant.

Merry Christmas to one and all.

Newcastle really are a class above and we have done really well to keep with them. Complacency aside (and excluding ourselves) a case could be made for them winning virtually every game, looking at their fixtures it's difficult to see where they will slip up. Also imagine they've got an eye on breaking the 106 point record.

That said I can also make a case for us getting well over 90 and I'm more confident about our prospects than I've been at any other time in the Championship

One game to go to the half way point and we should be on 51pts (touch wood). Out of the other 6 teams in the top 7, we have 4 or them at home.

That first part is worth emphasising. If we beat QPR, which hopefully we will, we will be over halfway to 100 points at the halfway point of the season. And that after an average start to the season of 8 points from 6 games. It is an amazing position to be in.

We had an amazing season last year but only got 44/45 points from the two half seasons. We're already 3/4 points ahead of that with a game to go.

We've played equal games against top half and in bottom half (assuming Villa don't get ahead of Barnsley) and have identical records: W7 D3 L1 Record against the other top 7 sides is not bad: W3 D2 L1. And our current away form - W6 D2 L0 since Newcastle - is actually even better than home form

Hughton has backed up his comments about turning draws into wins away from home. We don't often win by a lot away from home but we've developed a great habit of doing enough to win, yesterday being a good example.

When I started this thread back in October, I hoped it might calm a few nerves, to provide a season on season comparison. Frankly this team has turned it into a borefest. What have I got to complain about, other than there is little more to do than regurgitate a bunch of already well aired facts.

Best performing team across all divisions in 2016
13 clean sheets
Passed the relegation safety mark only half way through the season

What a time to be a Brighton fan !
http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-championship/2015-2016/table/2015-12-26 P 23 44 +8 Fourth
http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-championship/2016-2017/table P23 51 +24 First

Earlier in the season when we were pretty much following last season's form, our improved goal difference was entirely down to conceding less goals. We have now scored 7 more than at the halfway mark last season. It is easy to credit Murray here, Hemed had a barren spell late in 2015, when injuries and lack of squad depth, cut the supply lines to him. A mischevious time traveller may well wish to go back to the Summer of 2016 and let th NSC doomsayers know that Houghton was going to keep Goldson on the bench and that Kayal was going to be out for months with a broken ankle. I can almost hear the cries of anguish from here.

Just being a little picky.

14 not 13 clean sheets and our manager is called Hughton not Houghton...Blimey he's been here for 2 years now.

okay humour me again, hopefully I can bore my way to the end of the season. This will only get interesting if we start to slip.
After last week's poor effort I was determined to cut out the mistakes, that is until the statto site threw a wobbly and refused to spit out the tables.

So last season match 24 was a depressing 0-1 home defeat to Ipswich, leaving us on P24 44 +7 still hanging on to fourth http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35154753
By comparison trips to Craven Cottage are starting to rival Peterborough for a cracking day out. P24 54 +25 First with a game in hand.

It is so hard not to feel smug right now, so hard.

One little slip up is nothing as compared to last season, although, last season's side are not going to let up much from here on in.

This week's chart comes from football stats site http://clubelo.com/Brighton

Just a shame it doesn't yet include this weekend's results.A few other interesting graphics there if you haven't already seen them, well worth a quick look.

Third defeat of the season and they have swung back towards Newcastle for the title.

Bedwetters note they predict we will finish 14 points clear of Dirty Leeds, with a 95.2% chance of finishing above them.

So that's now a 100% chance to finish above Aston Villa? sweet, thats a first time in our history stat.
