This looks like 400-450 batting track to me. So assuming we end on around 270, how many wickets down would be considered Australia's day?

I'd say
4 down - Englands day
6+ down - Australia's day

from 28-3... I'd say 270-6 at the close was a result.

Most certainly, in respect of the dreadful start. Taking things as they are though, getting through to the close no more than 5 down must be the aim. 10 overs of the new ball to come.

From 28/3, I'd certainly have taken 270/6 but it still would have meant Australia were on top.

Hard to say for definite until they bat on this pitch, but probably.

Having lost the toss the Aussies will have been happy at lunch, disappointed at tea and now starting to get worried.

There's still 22 overs remaining today and we've been going along at 3.5 per over, so add 77 to the score and we're looking at c. 310. I think with 6 down it's even. Cook might have taken being 310-6 at close of Day 1. Basically, we've got off the hook. If these two can see out the remaining overs Australia will be looking down the barrel of a gun.

This is particularly pleasing for Ian Bell. His innings was a major reason we won last week, and now because I'm writing this, he's going to be out for a very commendable 96, which is another decent knock.

What do people think about Ashton Agar's 98 in light of the fact his series figures so far are 2-150? I fancy England will be happy for him to remain in the side, and by the time the Aussies think about dropping him after the third test the Ashes may already have been retained.

It was a gutsy knock and pure brilliance, but he is in the side to bowl and a spinner that doesn't take wickets in a heatwave is about as much use as Anne Frank's drumkit.

I was thinking the same thing when he came on looking powderpuff and ordinary. Mind you, he might well end up with another big score in which case Australia have an all-rounder on their hands.

And I'm nicking that phrase. Great work.

On the SKY graphic of the Australia team, they already list him as an All Rounder, yet not Harris, which seems odd.

Its a daft and arbritary distinction anyway. Every player bats, and most bowl the occassional over, so they're all 'All Rounders' really, just not necessarily very good ones!

The first objective for England is to retain the Ashes. A win and a draw will do it. If Agar has a sub-standard match will the Aussies selectors persevere or drop him? I can conceive that he might go down in history as the kid who got 98 on dayboo and was never heard of again.
