The Second Investec Ashes Test, England v Australia, Lords

What is wrong with people? England has a new star in Joe Root, he bats through the day and some posters on here are STILL whingeing about Pietersen.

Be patient. Enjoy Bell, enjoy Anderson, enjoy Swann and enjoy Root. You will not see another Ashes series this one-sided for quite a while. The others will come to the party soon enough.

If anyone really wanted to humiliate Australia, today was it, make them suffer for an entire day. Absolute torture for them.

Roots innings an absolute gem. To get that for him is without doubt total vindication in not following on.

Tomorrow is going to be brilliant, can put all 10 players round the bat if we want, 5 slips 2 gullys for the quicks. Wonderful.

Cook can't do that Lords is full for Sunday/Monday. Do you really think the ECB are into refunds ??

What cynical nonsense. As many posters on here and numerous experts really no need to follow on with so much time left.

Historically the follow on was there when we had 4 day test matches.

This has been a great days cricket. We'll have 2 days to get them out on the best days to bowl. Completely logical decision.

Go back to your original post. You wanted to drop KP not Bairstow.

yep, you are right, I got so twisted up in my ludicrous, childish hatred of KP I managed to for get my original point. But I'd never win a constructive argument with you because not only are you Big Nuts, you are a self confessed KP Nut, so I've got no chance.

That's your best post all day.

England seriously need to rethink their obsession with KP. Getting an England tattoo is not enough to prove your loyalty to a team, you should get your head down and bat for the team. Compton has been sacrificed and Root pushed up to open too soon in his career to the detriment of the team.

Drop KP, reinstate Compton as opener and put Root at 4, problem solved.

Original post. Ring any bells?

It was a long time ago in this thread that I said I thought Compton should still be opening. I did not suggest dropping KP for Compton as that, to coin the favourite buzzwords of the day, would be childish and ludicrous. My suggestion, and I'm really hoping this is clear enough, was
to reinstate Compton to opener, drop Root back to 5 where he is more comfortable. Bairstow drops out but offers middle order cover for injuries. Compton can bat long innings to hold up and end, blunt a bowling attack and give the later order batsmen ( KP included) the chance to take apart the bowling attack.

Root had looked shaky up til today and has now probably got the opening berth for the rest of the season however, I won't be expecting another innings like this in the series.

Bullshit

And that's my point. Have something personal against him by all means, that's your prerogative but you shouldn't let it cloud your judgement of both his ability & achievements.

I'm not though. He is a brilliant batsman.

And for the record I think that Root is lucky to be able to start his test career as an opener against this shower of shit of an Aussie team.

Get Root to 200 then declare, there are nearly two days of further pain to be inflicted on the Aussies.

I think they may fare better this time and at least last till tomorrow.

Subject to it not being clammy, I wouldn't even declare overnight

I would declare next wicket down as there's no point in Prior or any of the bowlers padding up but might as well have a cup of tea and see if anything is going on with the pitch. If we haven't lost a wicket after an hour or so, then declare.

Then destroy them

I would expect us to bat on and possibly declare at lunchtime, still plenty of time to bowl them out but not for them to score the runs required, not that they will anyway.

there was a most jovial comment on cricinfo congratulating Root on the 3 third 100 of the match (following Bell and Australia's achievements in the first innings)

I'd quite like it if we continue to bat for an hour or so, have Root retire bored for 215 and send Broad in without a helmet or gloves, do an extended bit of gardening and as when he eventually takes guard, pause, have him look around (the sky, the Aus team, etc..), lick his finger tip, twirl it in the air, nod sagely towards the balcony and THEN declare. That would be funny.
