To a point I agree.

At home I always use my Macbook Pro or my iPhone, the iPad (1st gen.) barely gets picked up. Out and about it's the phone.

However, if I'm jumping on a train for a long distance trip then the iPad can't be beat. The battery will last 10 hours whatever I ask it to do. If I hammer the phone, like any modern smartphone, the battery will wilt. A laptop is bigger, heavier and, again, with reduced battery life.

For kids in the car, it is fantastic. Hours and hours of video for them to watch and make their (and hence my) journey happier.

If I had to give up one of the phone, laptop or iPad then the iPad would be the one to go currently.

Interesting as I actually use my ipad a tad more than the MacBook....sort out the storage..(free iCloud) and I would say keep the phone/iPad and the MacBook would go if a choice has to b made

Personally, even though I use my iPad more regularly, I still need my MacBook Pro for Illustrator, Photoshop, web software and importing and editing video. It has been predicted that the next big wave of ios software will be the ndustry standard professional creative software. Can't wait!

My old 1st gen iPad was getting neglected a little as it was quite slow and I found myself using the MacBook pro most of the time but since getting the latest iPad I find I am using the iPad slightly more than the MacBook although that said if I was to give up either it would be the iPad not that I would be happy about it.

More portable than a laptop. Bigger screen and therefore better to use than a phone. I travel a lot and carry it much more than I ever did my laptop, which was too heavy to lug about if it wasn't absolutely required. The iPad's nowhere near as good as the full laptop for serious work but it is fine for use on the train or short business trips.

If Apple could improve iCloud to sync as well as Dropbox it would be even better.

i doubt it, there would be a substantial backward step of power. heavy creative users spend thousands on high spec machines, ipads are around the power of an early 00's PC. theres a general feeling at work (with many ipad users) that they are for content consumption, not creation.

Whilst I will give you the point that Apple is a well thought out Money making machine that plans how to control its markets (like all successful businesses) the hardwear is miles better than the oppositions.

Again you have a point about the 69p thing and apps and more importantly now storage is where Apple will lock you in and make billions but what is the alternative ? Oh yeah I know a platform that takes ages to load, crashes, has lots of stuff that doesn't run properly and just isn't as nice to use. I don't want to have to keep rebooting my machine, download patches, reload the o/s, etc etc I just want the machine to run so I can do the things I bought it for.

After having HTC phones all my life (even back to the old Orange SPV of ten years ago) I somehow ended up with an iPhone 3GS when my HTC Hero died. Found it ok and upgraded to the iPhone 4. But like others after the initial first couple of months of usage I found myself yearning for HTC again. Better founds and much more versatile. When work phone upgrade came along BOOM HTC Sensation XL. Happy again now. Apple: Underwhelming

I've never had a problem dragging and dropping using iTunes. Granted iTunes takes some getting used to but I find it pretty easy to use now and a lot better than the program I used with my mp3 player prior going the apple route.

Kinda with you on the SD card thing, but given how important quality of user experience is, I can also understand where Apple are coming from: you just know people would stick class 1 cards in there, then loudly whinge about how slow their device was. That sort of thing doesn't matter so much with a camera as it does with a tablet. Having said that, I'm sure there's a way they could, say, only support class 6 cards and above or class 10 only or something, so there's definitely a degree of taking the piss there.

As for "what is wrong with drag and drop", absolutely nothing: which is why it's how I move media and other files between my MBP and iOS devices every single day. Not sure what your point is.

Going back to the OP, if you buy an expensive piece of technology without figuring out whether you actually have a use for it, you're an idiot. If you've got no use for something, don't buy it, it seems spectacularly stupid to buy something without knowing whether you've got a use for it then whine about it being "useless".

Personally I use mine loads, both for fun and for work. I knew I was going to be moving abroad, and starting a new job for which it'd be useful, when I bought it. I'm not sure I would have had any use for it if that wasn't the case. As it is, it helps me feel much more in touch with home while I'm away, saves me carting a stupid number of books between countries, gives me access to all the magazines I used to read back home without having to pay for airmail subscriptions, and means I don't always have to bring the MBP with me when I go back to the UK for a visit as I can just bring the iPad for all the routine emailing/ facebooking/ browsing- which, as good as my iPhone is, the iPad screen is preferable for (plus I have a lot of books on the iPad which is handy when travelling). That's without even starting on how useful I've found it as an English language teacher out here.

I know what I wanted it for. Decent internet usage and general media consumption. Despite the reviews and brainwashed opinion of my peers It doesnt do that well. Websites dont work on safari, the interface is very clumsy, it doesnt integrate with anything non apple. Getting my films on it is a pain. I didnt say useless i said UNDERWHELMING. From my experience android stuff is much better. Basic laptops are MUCH better. I tried a product and im telling it how it is. My wife and my kids will use it so thats fine. They dont know any better. I Wanted to try Apple based on all of the hype. My point being that Apple have pulled off one of the biggest con jobs in modern history. People queue outside shops for days to buy this shit. That is HILARIO.

of course you're right, and most people here know a chunk about the choice between Apple and the alternatives. But not everyone understands the differences, the pros and cons of each.

It's great that we have this choice, Apple make some lovely devices.
