The iPad. What a load of garbage.

I really don't understand why anyone would want an iPad if they have a laptop and a smart phone.

To a point I agree.

At home I always use my Macbook Pro or my iPhone, the iPad (1st gen.) barely gets picked up. Out and about it's the phone.

However, if I'm jumping on a train for a long distance trip then the iPad can't be beat. The battery will last 10 hours whatever I ask it to do. If I hammer the phone, like any modern smartphone, the battery will wilt. A laptop is bigger, heavier and, again, with reduced battery life.

For kids in the car, it is fantastic. Hours and hours of video for them to watch and make their (and hence my) journey happier.

If I had to give up one of the phone, laptop or iPad then the iPad would be the one to go currently.

Which part of "i didn't hear it from Apple" don't you understand?

I'm really don't care for operating systems at all. I worked in IT for years and to me it isn't about that at all.

I try and find solutions so people are less chained to these boxes. My general experience is they tend to cause more work. We went through years of bad user interfaces, now all users are obsessed with what they *think* they can do for them.

By far the worst software I have to deal with is running on a Mac. Is the fault of the Mac ? Nope. Is the fault of the people who thought that by simply running a piece of software on that platform would solve all their problems ? 100% yes.

Great user interface mind....

These days I find it extraordinary (with apps) that users are out there obsessively hunting for things that they don't need done by things that don't need to do it.

I've also met numerous developers who are obsessed with porting their application to a tablet or phone, when the medium is completely 100% unsuitable.

Wasn't the spat a lot to do with the fact that Apple wanted a better customer experience than Flash provided - Using windows you might not know what that is with all the crashes!

I thought a lot of Apple's spat with Adobe was to do with how long it took them to develop Photoshop for OS X. Apple then developed iPhoto with basic photo editing capabilities which displeased Adobe. Flash was a latter battleground between the two companies that had already fallen out on other issues.

And that's MY point. This weird obsession with a single company. It's unhealthy.

Actually I do have some running issues with some software (design) on Mac and I understand what you are saying but........ on the browsing, social general stuff and now apps stuff Mac is miles ahead and that why at present "One" company seems to be an obsession

Adobe have had issues with lots of stuff - Christ people moaning about the cost of Apple stuff should try buying Adobe upgrades every year - CS6 is out soon!!

How so?

The browser on my htc is better than safari. Undeniable fact.

You didn't say that. You said the browser (whatever it is) is better than an iPad. The whole device.

Regardless it is not 'undeniable fact'. I like Chrome, others use Safari, others use Internet Explorer, some use Firefox and still others use Opera. And there are a zillion other browsers with small but dedicated user bases. That someone prefers one browser to another does not make it 'undeniable fact'.

Unless I've done something wrong - this is an iPhone app so it is tiny and doesn't allow access to seagulls player videos. £1.99 down the pan.

Skyfire has an iPad app as well as an iPhone one. Photon is the app that definitely works with Seagulls Player commentary. Not heard of anyone running it successfully through Skyfire.

On the subject of browsers, yes - I think Google have somewhat nailed it. Internet Explorer has always been a pile of crap.

I do have one single company preference. Google for searches. No-one else comes near and frighteningly no-one else will probably ever come near, for years and years at least.

Anyone who knows how search engines work will know it's all about the indexing and the algorithms and they LEARN. Unfortunately / Fortunately, Google got there years ago so if anyone is going to seriously compete we won't see the results for years. All the time, Google gets better.

Sad in many respects, but from a technical point of you have to give them respect. They are better in doing what they do, a millions times better than Apple are than Microsoft in terms of usability.

Interesting. I like chrome too on my laptop. Can you get it for iPad then?

What about with videos? Neither reviews of sky fire or photon are glowing in their abilities.

Yes, yes it does. The iPhone 4s introduced an 8mp camera. However megapixels are only part of the story when it comes to photos. Beyond the lens, the optics and accompanying software in an iPhone 4s will knock you Desire HD for six, and then some, when it comes to the quality of snaps that are possible.

I stand corrected then.

I went from a Nokia n95 to a Samsung jet (what a load of shit that was, smarter than a smart phone?!) No more need be said.

When the Samsung contract ended in November 2010 I had the iPhone/android conundrum and spent a long long time in the shop holding and playing with the desire hd / iPhone 4 When both were new handsets on the market, they both felt similar to hold albeit the HTC being a lot bigger but with a bigger screen,

I am still sceptical about the iPhone and have had a look at friends iPhone 4s and there doesn't seem to be a lot in it to be honest. The platforms look the same, the operating systems may be vastly different but I haven't seen a measurable difference in the look of it, (im now running the software upgrade so my HTC now looks and runs like the quite new sensation,

Why id apple launch the 4s as a new phone when the 4 could be software upgraded? Which is why I tend to prefer to lean toward the android format as mine automatically updates to the newest look and os.

The op is correct when he says that the apple marketing sucks people in to the brand, I have a laptop, don't need an iPad, my laptop can do everything I could possibly need and want it to do, I have an android phone, don't need an iPhone, what can an iPhone do that my android can't? Most apps are now multi format so what is the difference? Apart from google play(formerly android market) having more free apps than apple's istore?

Personally, I use the Football League app for the match videos. Only use Photon for the live commentary. Just tried the videos on Skyfire and it's a bit jittery. Definitely better quality through the Football League app.

Any thoughts of moving from my HTC desire to an iPhone have now been well and truly consigned to the dustbin. HTC One x all the way for me now.

You might want to think carefully about that move too! I have a Desire and its perfect but for the internal storage issue which means you keep having to keep juggling with apps that can't be moved to the SD card.

I thought the HTC One X was the answer but having trade some reviews I think it has some series flaws:

1) battery is not removable which is crucial since all these phones are so smart but not so clever at retaining juice. Aside front the customization options on Android, I went for a Desire over an I phone because I can carry a spare battery allowing me to use its full capability without worrying when I have no access to a charge point. And with that size screen through One X is going to suck juice like anything.

2) you cannot add extra storage as no micro sd slot. Forget the 32gb onboard and the free Dropbox space bundled with it you will soon get tight on space when you load up all your music, HD films and high spec games that the quad core processor is built for.

3) personally I think the One X is too much of brick with that size screen despite the thin body and its very plastic unlike the One S which has the same metal build of the Desire.

For the moment I will stick with my Desire and may take the brave move to root it which will mean you can push apps to the card and resolve the memory issue.

You can get the videos to work on sky fire? I've just installed the iPad version and it still doesn't work! The football league app is just for iPhones and doesn't work with seagulls player for some reason. GRRRR

Interesting. Maybe I'll look at the S then, was also taken by a work colleagues Samsung note but not sure if something that size could turn into a bit of a pain. Cracking piece of kit though.

Yes, on Skyfire, you need to press the symbol that looks like a lightning flash for it to stream the flash video... I hope that helps.

The Football League app is designed for the iPhone but it works on the iPad too. You need your Seagulls Player login details to watch the videos. I really like the Football League app - certainly worth £10 as you can watch highlights of almost any football league game by quickly switching teams (unlike, say, on a web browser, where you have to locate the various team websites and re-login the details just because you wanted to see, for example, Leeds getting stuffed 3-7 by Forest)

I feel completely mugged off. After listening to everyone bang on about how good the iPad is I finally took the plunge. One month later I now feel totally ripped off. £400 for a substandard Internet tool and storage device. Wow a lot of people are living in Emperors clothes land with this piece of kit. Went to watch seagulls player, oh can't do that, went to download some torrents, oh can't do that, just went to watch the golf on the BBC site, ARGGHhh, can't f***ing do that either. But it's ok there are a million apps you can buy that do shit that you never knew you'd ever want and I've already got them on my smartphone. Oh and it turns on quickly. Apple, I'm sorry, I tried, but my suspicions are correct, you have conned the masses. Why on earth would anyone want one of these over a decent laptop?

But basically this is like me saying "I'm useless at FIFA 12 (say) so IT is shit"
I have had an iPhone for two contracts now - before I always used to swap makers every time I came to the end of a contract - I find that the iPhone is the most intuitive phone that i have ever used
I swapped my Windows PC when it died for a Mac and wouldn't go back to a PC
Yes I suppose you could say that I've been sucked into the whole Apple ethos but to borrow their phrase - it just works
And it does . . .

I'm not emotional at all, just telling it how it is. I know those of you duped into thinking it is a top bit of kit for the money struggle to accept criticism of the device. I am quite relaxed, I am also going to buy the samsung galaxy tablet which is cheaper and will actually work with hard drives, my tv, and allow websites too work properly. My wife can use the iPad as I just find it frustrating.
Well u give the impression of a rant but hey....as far as criticism np..if it doesn't work for u cool..hope you find something that does...I find it extremely useful...and use it more than my MacBook pro..so it works for me...I pay for its simplicity ..best of luck
