People seem to forget that in our last glory season when we made the Playoff final in 1991 we only managed a paltry average of around 8,000 and in those days you could turn up and pay on teh gate now take into account the hassle of getting a ticket in advance the transports issues around getting to Falmer and 13,000 would seem very acceptable.
And just 4 years before that, Coventry City won the cup final in 1987, and finished in 7th place that season. Yet their opening game of the season was at home to Arsenal. Attendance: 10,100.

Proof, if it was needed (and most of us really don't need it) that looking at small gates from 2 decades ago is not a good indicator of attendance next season.

Indeed. I know it's fashionable on here to sneer that Sky Sports have ruined football and that modern stadia are expensive, soulless bowls but between them they've done a lot to make football more popular. Twenty years ago football crowds were largely white, male and working class, and football grounds were not pleasant places to visit for all sorts of reasons. For better or worse those days have gone; football's appeal has widened and that shows in the crowd figures.

The more the merrier really. What do we need to be getting to break even each week?

Even if we were in the premier league i doubt we would fill it every game, In all honesty how many "fairweather fans" would be bothered about seeing Wigan, Blackburn, Blackpool etc?

Thought people would be going to see the home team play not just to watch the opposition
