I can’t fathom it , myself.

It's a smaller part of the UK's GDP than Harrods.

I think it's the nostalgic, romantic, call of the sea and the 'going back to how things used to be' element and easily blaming it all on foreigners. Things like the legacy of the Cod Wars (which you know a thing or two about) the Scottish fishing family cartels, Whitehall administering the quotas, sustainability of stocks, free access to markets in Europe etc, all gets overlooked.

The metric I showed was what the actual rate of corporation tax. Taking a comparison of proposed percentage increases but not presenting it as such is disingenuous at best, deceitful at worse. Quite why the IFS choose to highlight only what the rate rise percentage is, not a comparison of the actual tax rates - as a logical thinking person yourself, you have to ask why. Surely the actual comparison of rates is essential?

as far as lending for enterprise is concerned, we have banks for that and they lend based on risk. if we want a state bank to discount the risk and lend to poor, non-viable business plans, there will be a lot of defaults to be underwritten by the tax payer. unless the aim here is to establish "Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly."

The £400Bn for the green transformation fund, quote frankly is needed.

i see, you mis-read or mis-understood the IFS graph. its not the rate rise, its the % of GDP, they are making the observation that countries dont raise so much as a proportion from corporation tax, the established economic theory being this tax becomes incident on worker and customers.

So if France and the UK have similar GDPs, how is France's corporation tax rate of 34.4% only raising 2.4% of GDP? Meanwhile Japan raises a huge figure of 4% in corporation tax given their GDP is 1/3rd bigger than the UK.

hazard a guess France has fewer corporations paying tax, more GDP generated from state spending.
