Good News afternoon round up:

  • Denmark reports 0 deaths for first time since March.
  • Iceland down to 10 active cases, with only 5 new cases in past two weeks.
  • Portugal - only 6 deaths in last 24 hours. Lowest figure since March.

They may be unable to reopen their borders to the wider world for a long, long time. The impact on trade and their economy could be very big.

Yeah, I was discussing that with my wife this afternoon. That stomped on it very quickly, to the extent that there were few cases and even fewer deaths (two months later, Boris is copying some of their moves). And they would have to do the same again if necessitated by a second wave, because they won't have any immunity, but they are very dependent on visitors coming into the country.

Similarly, we'll have to reopen our border at the Tamar river soon.

From Karol Sikora

Some interesting stats from the ONS.

The number of deaths per day at the end of April was actually below the five-year average.

This will slightly rise due to delays in registration (though the aim is registration within 5 days), but it gives us great hope it's ending.

Wow, is there a breakdown on average causes? I can think of a few that would go down (car crashes), but not enough to compensate for virus deaths.

The UK’s efforts to combat coronavirus has led to an estimated 1,700 avoided deaths due to lower air pollution, a study has found. In 30 days. That is 20k a year that we just accept, didnt even know it was that high.

Interesting comment from Jenny Harries, they must be seeing similar patterns to other countries that children don’t seem to be ‘good’ carriers for the virus.

I read that differently. I believe she's talking about the general level of the disease being low at the moment and so therefore chances are that it won't be transmitted by a child to an adult in school. It does not mean that if a child had the virus, the likelihood is low. That is an unknown.

Interesting to me that the BMA has today announced that it is too early to reopen schools.

Thanks, that's crazy isn't it? Yet we act as if coronavirus is the only game in town. In the spirit of this thread, let's hope lower air pollution is part of our future plans.

Just watched BBC news......it’s the total opposite of this thread, you wouldn’t know there were so many positive points emerging. Focus on the ‘grim toll’, the R number (let’s send a reporter to the region that has the WORST area) and the care home saga. Nothing at all about reducing hospital numbers, antibody testing, falling death rate trends.........depressing

Keep the good news coming chaps, love this thread.

Without wishing to side track the thread ..i take it the way didnt focus non that R number rising due to an increase in hospitals/care homes and not in the general community?

Good news from Slovenia i see...apols if fixtures

R rate increased to 1.2 for a short period in Germany, then declined again. The press are despicable what they are doing maybe I’m being over dramatic but to me, the press have such a big responsibility to the public and the constant fear they are instilling in people is horrible, had a phone call with my mum and she had seen this and was really worried, I cleared things up but I can’t imagine how many people see this across the country. It’s a really sad state of affairs and the press should be held to account.

Good and sad news. Jimmy's Corner just off Times Square in New York will reopen when allowed following the sad passing of its owner Jimmy Glenn from the Coronavirus. Jimmys was the original, best and cheapest dive bar in NYC. I was first introduced to it by a work colleague when I first came to New York over 10 years ago and loved it straightaway. Probably one of the narrowest bars in town it was a place to come after a crappy day at work, a place where hedge fund traders and down and outs mixed happily whilst waiting to get a drink from the owners feisty wife - if she liked you, you were in, if not find another server. The walls were covered in boxing memorabilia from Jimmy's career first as a boxer then as a trainer. As the article says Jimmy was a fixture right up to the end. I wish this place the best of luck under his son's management and hope it continues to be successful

Very local sorry, but ventured up a road called Northcote Road tonight for the first time in weeks. It's quite posh but my favourite pub is up there.

Astounded to see a couple of new businesses opened up. Not my thing, but a ramen noodle restaurant (obviously not open yet) and a new deli.

Fair play for anyone doing that.

In Balham some pubs have been doing interesting things, one has built a shop *just* inside selling nice wine and food and takeaway cocktails.

I'm hoping we see a bit of a independent, high street shop revitalisation . There are definitely a few now on my list that I didn't visit before.

Standing in the way of control
I remember reading some explanation for the in crease on a couple of days being down to a couple of clusters. Why an earth was the guy on R5 doing that

Just to add great posts this morning ..helps balance some of the replies to The Prof on his twitter account ..his tweets are my obligatory morning read but some of the attacks on him are quite sad

You'll always get people who are desperate to be negative but he's become a parody and is justifiably being called out.

What's more surprising is that people don't take two minutes to read his vastly contradictory views on the NHS prior to a couple of months ago.

From the Professor today:

There is a real chance that the virus will burn out naturally before any vaccine is developed.

We are seeing a roughly similar pattern everywhere - I suspect we have more immunity than estimated.

We need to keep slowing the virus, but it could be petering out by itself.

This was noted by a few research teams, a scientific team in Israel, who have done well stopping the virus said that lockdown reduces the spread of the virus but lockdown or not the virus seems to have a general pattern of burning out between 70-90 days whatever tactic you use. Looking at the patterns amongst many countries this does seem to have some credence but only time will tell.
