it all relative really isnt it !!

the best food i have had recently has been in pubs!!

The Hanover being a classic example. The chef there was a sous chef for Gordon Ramsey and as gone out on his own. This is indicitive of a lot of pubs now where the chefs have come from top restaurants.

Englishes is still top tho

How recently was this chef working in The Hanover ? I was up there the other day and the ale selection was superb.. if the foods as good I might take my fair maiden.

Blanch House, Planet India and Seven Dials all come a very close second to Due South, which gets me to vinegar strokes everytime.

Depends what you're looking for. Personally I would give it a 9. It's a cute little cafe with excellent prices to portions ratios, tasty food and very, very good service.

Sounds as good as I'd hope for the type of place it looked in passing.....busy but with quick service is fine for a quick meal.

My missus is Japanese, well Japanglish nowadays!!! We like good standards of Sushi etc (all about the quality of rice serving) but when we were last in Brighty, (13 years ago now) the Japanese food was seriously appalling....guess it's better now.

Anyway think I'll feast on a bit of nosh there next chance I get.

Cheers, Mellotron.

Everywhere
Had a meal in the bath arms yesterday with a lady friend and it was good honest grub at a fair price, round the corner in meeting house lane lies my favourite restaurant in chilli pickle if you haven't been you are seriously missing out. Really nice indian fusion food, the oxtail madras is amazing with a side of black daal. For quick cheap meals as already mentioned Pompoko and Casa don Carlos.

Pretty poor that Brighton & Hove has reportedly the highest concentration of restaurants outside London's West End, yet not one single Michelin star to its name (one Brighton restaurant had one in the Seventies, but nothing before or since).

i think its partially a lack of pretension in B&H (despite the "hove actually" jibs). if you wanted to start fancy resturant would you pick the Lanes with the other locals and parking, or say a country pub (as seems to be the trend from the above list)?

Al Rouche – at the top of Preston Street. Friendly, family run restaurant serving fantastic Lebanese food. ‘Nuff said.

I wish you luck. There are very few good restaurants in Brighton.

Plenty of mediocre restaurants in B&H, aimed mainly at tourists and on-a-budget locals, who want a cheap pizza and bottle of wine on a Saturday night.

You need to get to London for the good stuff.

The Fatherland
The Chimney House (I'm really liking this place..been about three times in the past 2-3 months)
Riddle and Finns
Giggling Squid (the choice of Glenn Murray as well)
Seven Dials
Oki Nami (this place got slaughtered in The Observer but I have only ever had their sashimi...which was pretty much the only thing which got a thumbs up in the same review.)
Due South was alright when I last went but it seems to be gerting a few negative comments these days.

Pretty poor that Brighton & Hove has reportedly the highest concentration of restaurants outside London's West End, yet not one single Michelin star to its name (one Brighton restaurant had one in the Seventies, but nothing before or since).

Three places in Hove and one in Brighton have Michelin bibs, though (the pikey equivalent of stars): Terre a Terre, Real Eating Company, The Meadow and Ginger Pig pub.

You have a point here. Sussex has a few, but not Brighton itself.
