See what gets me the Rugby League, Wales, England, Australia and New Zealand are all wearing poppy's on there kits this weekend

The difference here being all countries involved were Allies during the wars and all have the Poppy as their symbol of rememberence. And no-one will be watching anyway:D

Could they noT get round this with an armband of poppies?

Do they really need to ? Isn't there enough going on already at Wembley that day ?

Looks to me its getting to the stage where the REAL issue is not so much the poppies on the shirts, more a desire to flick a few V's at FIFA.

But this wouldnt have all gone on at Wembley that day had FIFA just allowed us to put the poppy on the kit.

I mean every player signs there kit and its then auctioned of and the money goes to the RBL

Have you seen the list of stuff thats going on at Wembley prior to kickoff ? There's LOADS of poppy-related stuff being auctioned off and plenty of pagentry to appropriately mark the occasion. I'm no FIFA apologist usually, but I can see why they don't want to start setting precedents by allowing National football shirts to begin showing symbols and emblems relating to historical events. It could be the thin end of a tricky wedge.

Well they are part of those countries national flag, so I guess thats why they are allowed.

Yes it is, but it's incorporated into the actual badge and not a change to the kit for a one off game.

is the rule that you're not allowed these symbols AT ALL or that you're not allowed them for a one off match?

if it's a one off thing then i retract my earlier statement

I know it is, but they're still religious symbols which are apparently banned

what about portugal......is a "cross" not a religious symbol?

Portugal.png

part of the approved federation's badge.

The poppy is not a national symbol in the way that a cross or a crecent moon or the star of david is when it is incorporated in the national flqag of the country. it is a symbol for a money making organisation (albeit with the finest intentions and impeccable background)

Decision 1
Players must not reveal undergarments showing slogans or advertising. The basic compulsory equipment must not have any political, religious or personal statements. A player removing his jersey or shirt to reveal slogans or advertising will be

sanctioned by the competition organiser. The team of a player whose basic compulsory equipment has political, religious or personal slogans or statements will be sanctioned by the competition organiser or by FIFA.

from the FIFA website

doesn't say anything about it being a one-off thing, just that they're banned

my point is that rightly or wrongly, these symbols, which include the poppy are banned for whatever reason

however, there are several national teams that carry religious symbols on their shirts (regardless of whether they are part of the national flag, they are STILL religious symbols) and these are allowed

the rules are quite clear but don't seem to be enforced unless it's england

Agreed, EDL just trying to get some publicity off the controversy.
Yup, the EDL protestor is standing there with a poppy banner which says 'Support our troops' thus managing to miss the point as badly as DerbyGull, albeit from the opposite direction. If the poppy wasn't political it is now, which is a crying shame.

EDIT: BLOCK F has summed it up for me with an absolutely brilliant post. (#50)
