It it worth mentioning that the following are being done on Saturday. I thought that FIFA had totally banned poppies, clearly not:

  • poppies on the kit players will wear during the national anthem
  • black armbands during the match
  • a poppy possibly being on permanent display on the Wembley scoreboard
  • a wreath being laid by the match mascots
  • a minute's silence before kick-off.

Ahem, the RED poppy is not a symbol of peace. It says I remember those fallen on our side and am not against war. The WHITE poppy says you're against ALL war and remember those fallen on both sides, yes that includes civilians. I'll be wearing the white thanks.

You small minded idiot.

‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’

Some wars are necessary my friend so yes you remember those that have fallen, but you serve them a grave injustice by not understanding the reasons for them going to war.

I have this poem hanging in my halllway, I know not the author or when written but please read.

The Inquisitive Mind of A Child

Why are they selling poppies mummy?
Selling poppies in the town today
The poppies child are flowers of love
For the men who marched away

But why have they chosen a poppy Mummy?
Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where poppies grow

But why are the poppies so red Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood my child
For the blood our soldiers shed

The heart of the poppy is black Mummy
Why does it have to be black?
Black my child is the symbol of grief
For the men who never came back

But why Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain
My tears are my fears for you my child
For the world is FORGETTING AGAIN

Spot on. The 'smal minded idiot' bit was a bit harsh though. I quite like DerbyGull.

a mountain has been made out of a molehill as mentioned before. It is a media driven, largely daily mail driven story. The players will have a poppy on their tracksuits. Whats the problem?

the problem is fifa having humiliated us over the world cup bid are flexing their might over us again, because they were shown to be corrupt.

Beautiful poem. Rememberance day and the wearing of poppies for me is about respect for those that have lost their lives serving their country and also as a reminder to all " lest we forget"

I think it's initial aim was to encompass all, but today it represents British soldiers only.

Total balls,.... try going to a rememberance parade,.... you will see in London especially that there is rememberance for ALL who fell, and attendance by many fo the 'opposition' from time to time. It is a fully inclusive, emotional, non-political, non-religious, non-commercial ideal.... designed to do nothing else other than remind and remember those who have served and fallen.

The problem for me is the reason given by FIFA - that poppies are political. They are not. They are a once a year tribute to and collection for people whose bravery means that we are free to (for example) have an exchange of opinions on an internet message board.

Awarding a football World Cup to a sun baked desert, however, is as political as you can get.

f*** FIFA. Who cares what they do. Wear the poppy and be proud to wear it. If FIFA don't like it pull out of FIFA. Last straw for me this. FIFA are a f***ing disgrace.

.... where the bigotted Republicans ignore their own history to denigrate huge swathes of Irish soldiers sailors and airmen who served and died in a time before partitioning. They fail to see that even an independant Ireland would have entered the fray on one side or the other at that time.

We as Englishman understand the significance of the poppy. We wear it with pride and to remember our ancesters who died so that we can live freely.

Sepp Blatter is Swiss, I guess he understands this less.

Disgrace.

Guess it is because we have not played around Armistice day before?

Personally its the way FIFA have failed to realise what the poppy is all about and still leading with the line political line. Ofcourse it is media driven otherwise how would people know about it

Then do yourself a favour and dont wear it anywhere near me then .

PS For the record , maybe FIFA have got a point, and I only wish people would get a little more defensive at more genuine insults to the poppy.
