Just got home expecting to see either Jenson Button or David Haye crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year only to find that boring Welsh twat has got it.

WHY?

He hasn't done anything.

Button - WORLD CHAMPION

Haye - HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD

Giggs - Played for Manchester United like he has done every other f***ing year since forever and didn't EVEN win the Champions League. All he's got is YET ANOTHER Premiership medal which - to be honest - is nothing new or even exciting.

An absolute crock of shit on every count. The British voting public have once again proved themselves to be morons.

At this rate we'll still have Gordon Brown in charge after the next general election.

f***ing SCANDAL

See the other thread. I can't be bothered to argue, but I couldn't disagree with you more.

Button - WORLD CHAMPION

Haye - WORLD CHAMPION

Ennis - WORLD CHAMPION

Tweddle - WORLD CHAMPION

Daley - WORLD CHAMPION

Idowu - WORLD CHAMPION

Strauss - Captain of the Ashes-winning England team

Cavendish - Most successful Brit EVER in the Tour de France

Murray - Reached number 2 in the world and won six tournaments including being the first Brit to win at Queens in 80 years.

Compared to that lot, Giggs in 2009 (which is the only year that counts for this award) has done sod all.

Couldnt agree with you more. I think the main reasons behind him winning are:-

a) Its not an olympic year

and

b) Its very rare to actually get a footballer as one of the contenders for the award and as there loads of plastic mancs - it is not surprising he gets the votes. Of course football is the most popular sport in the world. Thats my conclusion anyway.

Would you not agree that for Ryan Giggs winning the Premier League is the closest thing, for him, to those you have mentioned becoming World Champion?

And don't say: "No, that would be winning the World Cup"!

How many people go formula 1 driving hat you know in comparrison to play football. Driving cars, horse bloody jumping and tiddly winks have bugger all people play it so to be a world champion in those sports is like being bar billiards champion down the dog and uck - just posher. About time a proper sportsman who is better than millions of other people who try and do the same as him got recognised, instead of some bloody "sportsman" from a sport that nobody plays like showjmping, cycling, saailing dingys or even (and im a fan) formula 1 driving

Why not, because it would be...

ASBOlutely.

PERHAPS if Giggs had scored the winning goal in the Champions League final - the biggest competition he has any chance of winning - there might have been SOME justification. But he hasn't. He wasn't even part of a team that won the Champions League. They lost, BADLY.

Being player of the season for your club - just to SPITE the Portuguese cock who wanted off to Madrid - does not make you Britain's greatest sportsman of the year.

I can't begin to describe how disappointed I am with this.

No, I don't think it would.

For Giggs, winning the Premier League is the pinnacle of the domestic game. For people like David Haye and Jenson Button, becoming World Champion is pretty much the only thing, based on ability alone, they can win and I think that is comparable in it's achievement to winning the Premier League. On the International stage in football you can be held back by your place of birth and your team mates, very few of the other contestants on SP09 had/have that problem. It's not like Giggs is going to win the World Cup with Wales.

No it isn't.

Becoming World Champion means you are the best on the PLANET at what you do. Winning the Premier League means you are part of a team which is the best in the COUNTRY at what they do.

Even when it came to international competition in the form of the Champions League, Giggs was not on the winning side.

Champions League would be arguable, yes, but not the World Cup. Anyway, besides all that, how do you judge a team sportsman against an individual? It is completely subjective.

If winning the Premier League as a Manchester United player qualifies you to be SPOTY then why not f***ing PARK JI-SUNG?

I could win a Premier League medal if Manchester United gave me a squad number so don't give me all that shit about Giggs being held back by his country of birth.

He'd have been a more justifiable winner last year when he was decorated with a Premier League winner's medal AND Champions League honours.

By all means give the man a pat on the back for showing years of professionalism in his field but to claim he is the BEST SPORTSMAN this country has witnessed this year is totally unjustified.

When was the last time SPOTY was awarded to somebody who'd not really won anything important?

See my last post. As I have said before on another thread, it is not just about what you win (Premier League and Carling Cup), it is about professionalism, attitude and aptitude, for which Giggs is absolutely top class.

What the f***? I'm right in thinking you wanted David Haye to win? Right?

in 2009 (which is the only year that counts for this award)

David Haye won one fight, in 2009, to be the World Champion.
36 minutes. That's it.

Ryan Giggs played in the best football team in England of 2009 at the age of 35-36 and won the top tier competition in this country, for the 11th time. Not to mention CAPTAINED the runners up of the Champions League.

I can agree to it being a shock, but that statement was ridiculous.

I can answer that, thelast time sport personality was awarded to someone who won something pointless, well what about zara phillips and her pony? How many people go show jumping do you know compared to play football? Or the cyclists and all thse sports where to be bnuber 1 you either need loads of cash and be better than about 100 othr people on the planet.

Point is though, he has achieved NOTHING new this year, he is no better regarded as 2009 draws to a close than he was when it started.

The award is supposed to recognise sporting achievement THIS YEAR and on that scale, Giggs does not measure up to the other candidates.
