Have any of the people slating Giggs seen him play this year?? The guy is playing quality football for his club, he's the model professional and is a credit to football, and to everyone saying he's not a world champion, Didn't United win the Club world cup at the beginning of the year? I'd say that makes him part of a world championship winning team

Fair play to Giggs but how anyone can think he is more worthy of this award than the likes of Button and (in particular) Haye is beyond me. And, as Lush has said, what personality?!
It just shows how many people in this country are a bit thick.

An absolute crock of shit on every count. The British voting public have once again proved themselves to be morons.

At this rate we'll still have Gordon Brown in charge after the next general election.

f***ing SCANDAL

Yup, the electorate are "f***ing MORONS"

It seems like we're going to have a tory government at the next election.

The older people here remember thather, like archer/bellotti, NEVER AGAIN!

Point is though, he has achieved NOTHING new this year, he is no better regarded as 2009 draws to a close than he was when it started.

The award is supposed to recognise sporting achievement THIS YEAR and on that scale, Giggs does not measure up to the other candidates.

The prize is technically awarded:

."..to the sportsperson whose actions have most captured the public's imagination in 2009."

Not who won the biggest prize.

On this basis, newspaper and sports editors from a variety of publications nationwide submit their candidates. From this list, the most popular are chosen.

So enough of these people felt he warranted being there in the first place and then it is put to a public vote.

He has definately captured the public's imagination this year. Clocked up 800 appearances, scored his 150th goal and won a record 11the Premiership medal.

In the true spirit of the award, I feel he's a fitting winner.

The BBC asked 26 newspapers to nominate their 10 candidates for SPOTY. The ONLY candidate to receive the full complement of 26 nominations was Button - Giggs got 11 nominations.

Reading that another way, 15 newpapers thought Giggss' achievement weren't even good enough to make it on their shortlist of 10, and this is with football getting the most sporting column inches in most, if not all, papers.

Now don't get me wrong - Giggs has a case but this clearly was Button's year and but for a Welsh / Man Utd conspiracy a top show would have finished with the right outcome. Even f***ing Giggs could't believe he'd won.

I don't see why people are getting so worked up, out of all the people kicking of on here about how Giggs won it did any of you vote? Same as politics if you don't vote you shouldn't moan about the outcome.

Had I known the Welsh and Man Utd fans were voted in their droves for Giggs I definitely WOULD have bothered to vote.

That about sums it all up really, you can make plus points and negative points for everyone mentioned on this thread but for Giggs he has achieved milestones in this calendar year that are not likely to be surpassed.

Fair enough - although the BBC don't present it as such, all the presentations on the candidates focus on their achievements. If you're really talking about sportspeople capturing public imagination, then Eddie the Eagle should have won it in 1988 - he was totally crap but more then 20 years later, he's still probably one of the few wintersports people the general public can name. It does seem that the BBC want to have it both ways.

I thought it sporting achievements, Cavendish was many miles ahead of anyone else but you can't really argue about a public vote.

All these idiots saying Giggs has no personality; what do you want in a sportsman? Do want them to be out in the nightclubs, on the front of magasines and driving super-cars? Do we not slag Brighton players off for such acts?

The fact that Giggs is a family man with no desire to be in the spotlight makes him the perfect sports personality in my opinion. I would put Paul Scholes in the same bracket, and the reason they have enjoyed such success is because of the way they handle themselves. They are model professionals.

Button and the like have enjoyed one good season and (fairly enough) are milking their 15 minutes of fame. Until they do more I would not say they are deserving of this award. I think Giggs is just as worthy as any of the others.

But then surely they are more deserving of a LIFE TIME achievement award?

1 PFA player of the year for 2009 i believe
2 Model professional unlike some others
3 Plays for "the world's favourite football team"
4 All the Man U fans voted for him and because 3 comes into play that's lots !

Lifetime achievement award - yes absolutely.
SPOTY 2009 - naah, he's not had an especially good year in 2009.

Just a case of how football dominates I'm afraid.

Complete Joke!

"Personality:

"Of the Year"

Once this became a phone poll, it was only a matter of time before it decended into a farce.

Ennis, Haye, Button, Cavendish would all have been far more worthy winners IMO.

If Giggs were to win something - give it a couple of years and dish out a lifetime achievement one.

Joke.

I think the point here is that rather like the X Factor, they don't give a shit who wins, it's all about how many mugs will pay money to vote and the Giggs supporters won on this occasion, so that says a lot about manure supporters!

Everyone has their own sports and favourites so it's just about how popular the sport is, not how good the sportsman/woman is - anyone on here can kick a ball but how many would face a 7' 6" giant who wants to beat the shit out of you.

P.S. to the knockers of cycling I think you'll find cycling is only a 'minority' sport in the UK, in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Holland etc it's 2nd only to football, anyone who thinks it's easy wants to try the TDF route in 21 days at race pace!
