Only a Prem footballer could be left off from 15 of the 26 shortlists then go on to win it.

From now on we can expect various Prem footballers to win it, punctuated every Olympiad by a 'proper' competion. My predictions:

2010: Wayne Rooney
2011: Gareth Barry
2012: A cyclist
2013: Rio Ferdinand
2014: Theo Walcott.

Murray - Reached number 2 in the world and won six tournaments including being the first Brit to win at Queens in 80 years.

Thought you were being serious with your list till I got to this bit. Murray bottles it when he gets to the big tournaments.

And as for Jensen Button?

All these idiots saying Giggs has no personality; what do you want in a sportsman? Do want them to be out in the nightclubs, on the front of magasines and driving super-cars? Do we not slag Brighton players off for such acts?

The fact that Giggs is a family man with no desire to be in the spotlight makes him the perfect sports personality in my opinion. I would put Paul Scholes in the same bracket, and the reason they have enjoyed such success is because of the way they handle themselves. They are model professionals.

I agree with this.

"He has no personality" is the most bittr, tardy thing being written today as far as I can see. Hell, Owen is a previous winner, I didn't hear anyone complaining because he wasn't always out on the piss like Freddie Flintoff!

Giggs got it due to a combination of sympathy votes and the fact that we had a fairly poor sporting year with no really outstanding candidates.

I think he was put on the list as it must be his turn soon before he retires..

Giggs has been a terrific servant to manure, but the fact is, the vote was hijacked by the manure fans. In no way can his 2009 achievements be considered worthy of Sports Personality of the Year, its not like he was "instrumental" in Utd winning the prem (yet again, yaaawn). Its just a populist vote by a larger concentration of fans for that particular club. If Alan Shearer had been nominated, then Newcastle fans would have won it for him, even though he took them down !

Ennis or Button were FAR more worthy candidates for what they achieved this year.
Anyway, this thing was compiled from half a million votes. X-Factor had something like 18 million votes, so it just shows how laregly irrelevent this award has become these days. The last two winners have shown its definitely time to scrap it now.
