If winning the Premier League as a Manchester United player qualifies you to be SPOTY then why not f***ing PARK JI-SUNG?

I could win a Premier League medal if Manchester United gave me a squad number so don't give me all that shit about Giggs being held back by his country of birth.

Sorry mate but in my opinion you're talking rubbish. I know the first part of that comment was only in jest but there is no doubt that Giggs' ability to shine at the best quality competition in football is hindered by the fact that he is Welsh.

I disagree, the only time when it ISN'T about what you've won is when it comes down to triumph over adversity - such as someone like Lance Armstrong (who obviously wouldn't qualify anyway).

It wasn't even an OUTSTANDING Manchester United team that he was a part of. Chelsea were a better team last season but suffered from management f*** ups AND yet they STILL performed far better against the eventual Champions League winners than the 3-0 losers did. Why not therefore give it to their captain? Or Frank Lampard - who also struggled with the death of his mother?

Ryan Giggs is NOT a worthy winner of this accolade in this year and it STINKS that he's won it

You bunch of mugs! if I'm not correct giggs has scored in every premier league campaign, is the most capped man utd player of all time, conducts himself impeccably off the pitch too!

Button has done f*** all, maybe when he wins it another few times ska Schumacher then he will deserve it. Haye has has yet to defend his belt unlike calzaghe who defended it hod know how many times

I could go on and on about all them other mugs but I can't be bothered cos on my mobile and it takes ages to type!

Point is though, he has achieved NOTHING new this year, he is no better regarded as 2009 draws to a close than he was when it started.

The award is supposed to recognise sporting achievement THIS YEAR and on that scale, Giggs does not measure up to the other candidates.

The fact that he has won nothing new is completely irrelevant. It's not as if it's an award for the most improved sportsman, or best newcomer.

I can answer that, thelast time sport personality was awarded to someone who won something pointless, well what about zara phillips and her pony? How many people go show jumping do you know compared to play football? Or the cyclists and all thse sports where to be bnuber 1 you either need loads of cash and be better than about 100 othr people on the planet.

Do you know what, you're right. Zara Phillips winning it has already made a mockery of this award so I don't know why I even care anymore.

It's clearly a completely worthless trophy now, which is a shame, so f*** who gets it.

Totally agree what a farce but as soon as i realised Giggs was nominated he was always going win even if a fraction of the UTD fanbase and the welsh voted for him.

He was not the best Sportsman of 2009, the beeb have totally cocked this up.:nono::nono:

Anyway a personality award should not be mentioned with Giggs name at all, cos he don't have one.

"The fact that he has won nothing new is completely irrelevant."

No its not, it what they achieved in 2009, and 2009 only.
the rest of his career is irrelevant for this award.

I think you mis-read or mis-understood my post, or the one I responded to.

The fact that he hasn't won anything this year that he hasn't won before has no bearing on whether he deserves SP09.

Sports sports sports!
Button - WORLD CHAMPION

Haye - WORLD CHAMPION

Ennis - WORLD CHAMPION

Tweddle - WORLD CHAMPION

Daley - WORLD CHAMPION

Idowu - WORLD CHAMPION

Strauss - Captain of the Ashes-winning England team

Cavendish - Most successful Brit EVER in the Tour de France

Murray - Reached number 2 in the world and won six tournaments including being the first Brit to win at Queens in 80 years.

Compared to that lot, Giggs in 2009 (which is the only year that counts for this award) has done sod all.

Well said.

Ryan Giggs played in the best football team in England of 2009 at the age of 35-36 and won the top tier competition in this country, for the 11th time.

You missed a word.

SPARINGLY

He started just FIFTEEN games during the second half of last season in ALL competitions.

Based on your view of this award people who have 1 good year/fight/race season deserve this award. Is it called "sports personality that has acieved the most in the calender year award"?

How many people go formula 1 driving hat you know in comparrison to play football. Driving cars, horse bloody jumping and tiddly winks have bugger all people play it so to be a world champion in those sports is like being bar billiards champion down the dog and uck - just posher. About time a proper sportsman who is better than millions of other people who try and do the same as him got recognised, instead of some bloody "sportsman" from a sport that nobody plays like showjmping, cycling, saailing dingys or even (and im a fan) formula 1 driving

the fact less people get to be an f1 driver must make it a bigger achievement
