rooney won't last long as a captain, maybe he will go on another 2 year spell of not scoring an international goal or maybe get banned for stamping on another player for being a complete cretin. if terry isn't role model material according the sun rooney is far far from being england captain. there will be protests in the streets of britain if rooney is made captain.

Rio Ferdinand - New England Captain

John Terry dropped as England captain

Oliver Kay and Ben Smith

John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy with Fabio Capello appointing Rio Ferdinand as his replacement.

The England manager informed Terry that his position as captain was untenable following recent revelations about his personal life. Their meeting at Wembley was described by sources as "civil", with Capello thanking Terry for his performance since taking the job in 2008.

The Italian made it clear that recent adverse publicity had come to overshadow the team's preparations for this summer's World Cup finals. Ferdinand, the Manchester United defender, will be confirmed as Terry's replacement, with Steven Gerrard promoted to vice-captain.

"After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," Capello said in a statement. "As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

"What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice. John Terry was notified first. When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore, for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team."

Terry's captaincy was called into question after a controversial super-injunction was overturned in the High Court, allowing the disclosure the Chelsea defender has been accused of conducting an affair with Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel.

Capello is understood to have expressed concerns about how Terry’s captaincy would affect the harmony within the squad. The England manager flies to Warsaw on Sunday for the Euro 2012 qualifying draw.

Capello = WEAK manager.

The media have loaded the gun and he was stupid enough to shoot it. Who's is he going to give the armband to??... Nightclub attacker? Drug test failure? Stewardess attacker? Roaster? Prossie Shagger? Stricker who constantly moans and swears at refs? or a player that isn't guarenteed a starting place?

I am not necessarily sure it is the right decision to axe Terry but I have a feeling that Terry has told Capello today that more skeletons are going to come out of his cupboard in the very near future. However, it is obviously a sign of strong management, isn't it showing to the other members of the squad keep your nose clean on and off the field I am not a man to be messed with.

Tommy Lawton for me, clean living no nonsense approach.

Fabio was never going to let a carry on like Terry's get in the way of his sole aim, to win the World Cup. He has sorted it. Very impressive isn't he? No nonsense approach.

As a team leader, you MUST portray the correct behaviours and lead by example, its a fact whether people like that or not!

I, as a manager always ensure I have a no.2 within my team who has respect and portrays the right behaviours that breeds the correct behaviours in my team.

Terry is a great footballer but also a complete PRICK!! Correct decision!!!

Utter bollocks!

The correct behaviour is for Terry to go out and win the world cup for us. Who gives a f*** what he or any of the other players get up to when the walk off the pitch.

How do you know he is a complete prick? Know the guy do you? Likewise how do you others know he's mates with Bridge? Are you chummy with all of your work colleagues?

People have affairs all the time from every walk of life, get over it! No one got hurt, no one broke the law.

It won't be long before Rio cocks up. He is an accident waiting to happen. Don't think he's even good enough to make the team anyway

:lolol::facepalm:

He is the best option in my opinion, not many other options apart from Rooney, but that would have been risky because it might have had a detrimental effect on his game.:shootself

I trust Capello on this, he is not stupid and wouldn't do anything that would potentiall damage our chances in the World Cup.

We don't know what happened during their meeting today and I don't believe Capello wopuld make the decision purely on the media outcry about Terry's behaviour.Perhaps other England players refused to support Terry? Simply, we don't know.

Perhaps Terry would have been Captain still if he held up his hand up, offered sincere apologies ( not to his sponsors!) and even offered to resign.

JT is the sort of guy you'd want to be going into battle with, a leader amongst men and a top one at that. Leads by example on the field anh has done a teriffic job as captain. As someone has previously mentioned if it's not JT it's got to be Rio or Stevie G.

Which paper was it that chose to undermine our national side at the start of World Cup year? Wasn't the Australian owned 'The Sun' was it?

.

Given the circumstances I think this is good news and IMHO it is the correct response from Capello.

I think it was Terry who, for a number of reasons, undermined the national side. Shagging a team mate's bird is pretty damn stupid. Having an affair is one thing, with a team mates missus is a whole different game. If you want to undermine a team...I cannot think of many better ways to achieve it.

He was grossly stupid and ill-advised to try and gag the press as well. Again, is there a better way to piss of the hacks than to try to gag them? You piss the press off of course they will go for you.

This situation lies solely at the feet of John Terry, no one elses.

So we swap an adulterer for a drugs cheat.

I wonder what the consensus will be on this? Again, it's probably the right footballing decision given the circumstances (captained his club, successful etc...) but kind of shoots down in flames the argument that the England captain needs to be squeeky clean.

Cappello can seemingly do not wrong. It's totally the RIGHT decision, taken in the right way.

I LOVE the fact the FA left it up to Cappello and I LOVE the fact Terry's been sweating on this for a week - giving him plenty of time to reflect on what a prick he's been.

And he HAS been a prick. Journalists close to him and Chelsea have told that to his face and then they've recounted it on telly.

As for the new captain, Cappello has gone for vice-captain Ferdinand. Logical choice, I'm OK with that.
