should have saved face and resigned but still thinking of himself rather than the team. Ferdinand struggles with fitness so he seems to be a strange choice

As much I can't say he IS a drugs cheat, you can't say he isn't.

the fact remains he was banned for 8 months for missing a drugs test. A ban that will remain on his record forever.

I personally think all sportmen and women should be able to take as many drugs as they want. I want to see weight lifters holding buses above their heads at the 2012 games, blink and you miss the 100ms, shot putts in orbit.

I reckon that Capello has got both a sense of what's right and wrong and a pair of balls bigger than most involved at the higher level of the game, to stand up to these overpaid, out of control prima donnas. I'm not even much of an England supporter but hats off to the man - it's a brave and correct decision.

The voice of reason. If anything it should actually take a bit of pressure off Terry which he could do with at the moment. It also sends out the right message from the manager, I like his style.

Oh well bang goes any faint hope we had of success at the World Cup.

Rio Ferdinand is NOT a world cup winning captain

Is Rio in the team frequently any more? I don't remember him being in recent games much, but that could be injury related. My thinking being that Rio may be captain, but will require someone to deputise... JT?

Is this the first world cup we've had our scapegoats ready for when we get knocked out BEFORE the tournament?

Yes, we were clearly going to win it if it wasn't for Terry shagging around/the media being wankers.

Rio Ferdinand, CAPTAIN??

No likey, no lighty!!!!!1

Didn't do so bad when he won the league and reached a champions league final as captain last season.

Just needs to get fit really. Hope his back is up to it - he was poor before he had the operation, hopefully he'll be back to his best now.

He's not the club captain though. He's not even the vice captain.

1) Gary Neville

2) Ryan Giggs

3) Rio Ferdinand.

Now I know Gary barely played last year and Ryan Giggs only managed about 50% of the games, but if Rio was such a great captain wouldn't Fergie have made him first choice captain?

Rio is ther logical replacement seeing as he was vice captain to Terry's captain.

Personally I'd have preferred Gerrard as captain but it's not that important is it? I'm sure gerrard, rooney, lampard etc are going to still perform in exactly the same manner regardless of who is captain. They're not suddenly going to become non-triers or really quiet just because ferdinand is now captain are they?

Some commonsense amongst the knee-jerk hysteria.

JT responded in the perfect manner today with a captains performance for Chelsea against Arsenal. Well done JT.
